I see that bhphoto every so often has stuff that's marked "Import" but looks the same as the domestic versions. What's the difference here? why the difference in cost(I'm guessing lack of warranty coverage from grey market type importing?)

Import stuff typically has a lesser warrantee, but is otherwise the same product. The warrantee also is fulfilled at different locations. One is primarily through the dealer, while the other is primarily through the manufacturer.
In general, unless its a big differential, I'd go with the non import stuff.

i think the import items are warrantied by BHphoto.
the US items will be repaired/warrantied by the manufacturer.
not all stores offer a warranty on import items.
i generally stick with the non-imported items.

you can also buy a warranty for grey market stuff through companies like Mack.

Ok read the whole thing.
The USA warranty is valid worldwide, yet other coutnry's warranties are only good in te country of origin/purchse. At least that is what i read.
SOOO, I am a world traveler (vacation, move, work, military) and buy a Nikon/Canon/Leica (or whatever) in England becuase I live there (now, then, for 6 months, my 20d fell in loch ness an di have to cover tiger woods for SI, etc) and I move to the US (or come on business, visit home etc).
My english Nikon has an issue, under warranty. I'm screwed or i ship it to europe? Seems like the rest of the world is being screwed by this.
And I also find it a bit odd that all companies are like this - conspiracy?

I disagree. Nikon USA is know for its lack of customer support and hard stance on repairs. Import/ grey items are usually much less than USA items. Also if you buy new grey items from major outlets such as B&H or Adorama an incuded option is a warranty from a third party such as themselves or someone like MACK. MACk warranties are quite cheap, and the company really does deliver (for me 4 times that I can remember). The warranty plus the purchase price is usually still much cheaper than the USA product with LIMITED warranty alone.
Plus USA Nikon plays big brother by choosing which products customers in the US want. Many products that are still being produced by Nikon are not being sold by Nikon USA. One such product is the great 70-180 Macro and many all manual ais lens (yes, there are still photographers wanting such lenses).
FYI for those who are confused remember all Nikon USA is a importer, not a manafacturer. |
