Am thinking of upgrading with a used 70-200mm 2.8 non IS as i need the longer focal length (only have the kit lens and 50mm 1.8).
Or selling the 300D and get the 20D. Reason for the 20D is mainly for the servo function and ISO performance.
which way shoudl i go?

when I'm faced with a dilemma like this I grasp it by both of it's horns and wrestle it into the ground. or buy both. your choice.

I predict most people will say "upgrade". So many lonely "Rebels" with the birth of the 20D :( |

I think I might go with the lens. The rebel is a 6MP, right? People here who have rebels make fantastic images. Lenses are pretty important and you said you want the extra range.
By the time you are ready to move up to another body, the 20D will be much cheaper than now, or you can move up to whatever has replaced it at that time and have some great glass to use when you do. |

this is a valid point. (good) lenses are your good friends. or to paraphrase MM: lenses are forever! :)
If you can sell your rebel (or if you'll use it as a backup) go for the 20D otherwise for the lens. I'm faced with the same dilemma: 10D keep or buy 300 F4 IS or 20D. I'd really love to have the 20D but in a few months (max 2 yrs) it will be outmodeled by xxD. The lens will be there to stay.

OK, the 20D is definately a better camera. But is it better enough to sacrifice 70-200 2.8L (IS or not). Prolly not. 300D=6MP 20D=8MP, diff (from 300->20 = 1/3) 30%. 20D faster, and black BADASS. But L is L, no matter what camera you put behind it. (let's not get into what photog you put behind the camera :)
I understand your dilemma. I have a feeling that a new camera (successor to 300D) will be unveiled next spring. But I have NOTHING to base that on, except pure speculation.
Good luck. You'll be happy with either - happier with both :) - but the lens is a better investment than the body. IMHO

The fact remains, the 20D body will not help your focal length issue. In your spot, I would gp for the lens, and save up for the body. The way the 20D's are selling, you may even be able to find a good used 10D for a reasonable price.

Go for the lens, camera's are a bit like hi-fi - junk in, junk out! You will be better off with the lens and if you upgrade to another Canon xxD then you will have some superb glass.
The 300D has a 'life' cycle of about 18 months so I expect to see the 300D mark 1 out in the shops early in 2005. Anyway I would not upgrade to a 20D at the moment as I am more than happy with my 300D.

It depends, I have the rebel. I shoot mostly sports. So here is my take.
If your shooting mostly out door sports with good light go for the lens. But if you want to shoot indoor sports or at night. The rebel is just to slow and iso at 1600 you dont get many keepers. I'm very lucky, I have the long glass, and last night my wife gave me a early Chirstmas present, I'M PROUD NEW OWNER OF A 20D!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have a basketball game to shoot tomorrow night, I'll post back to confirm if its worth the up grade. Here is a shot from fall softball with non-is 70-200 sigma.

Don't go for the body , I would not go for the 20d , I'm not saying anything about the 20d I don't think it is worth it ,wait till canon brings the 1.6 down to 1.3 or 1 and then I will jump leaving out the Mark 11 it's too steep for me |

okie then, i'll go the lens..
now, do i get a new sigma 70-200 2.8 or a used canon 70-200 2.8. Price wise they are roughly the saem depending on the condition on the Canon lens right?

With the action pics you take, especially MotoGp, you already have a great camera...lens way makes sense.
Keep taking those bike shots! |
