Bag them both and go for the Nikon D2h, the price on it dropped $1,200 dollars today. Now you can pick one up for $1,999! |

I met a pro traveling on a shoot in Bejing in the 80s, and he changed my attitude about what looks cool in a camera. He had three F1 bodies all covered with different colored electrical tape, one red, one blue and one yellow. He said it made them look less attractive to theives and reminded him which one had what film in it. He treated his cameras like tools.
I'm in construction and my tools look like hell, I can always tell how much experience a carpenter has by how pretty his tools are. I wish I had the guts to ugly up my camera andmake it look as used as my twenty tear old framing hammer, I keep thinking I will the day the warantee expires and I have nothing to loose. I'm thinkink of purple electrical tape, what do you think? Maybe purple and black stripes? |

Any strange perception of either camera being 'better' or more 'badass' is all in an individual's head, and is certainly not going to be the deciding factor in photography itself.. unless one is so far stuck in the realm of psychological dependance on style that it actually *does*..
Which would just be sad. |
There are way to many people that are stuck on the visual looks of the camera body they use that it seems like the camera is more of a fashion accesory then a tool to capture moments in time with.
Personally, I wouldn't care if I came home and discovered that my camera body suddenly turned fuscia or lime green. Certainly, it would be a surprise, but that wouldn't make me stop using my camera, unless the color change coincided with a degradation in actual performance.
Like I have remarked before, if I am out shooting and someone spits out some snide remark about how 'amatuer' my Rebel looks, if I felt like responding at all, I would say that I am out there to take images, not show off and compare my male bits with anyone. |

hrmm...Personally, I guess you should feel comfortable about the camera you're holding -- you should feel that you look good with it.
If you had a camera phone that took a 6 MP photo with the same quality as your 300-d for example, you just wouldn't feel right doing a model shoot with it. If you say you would, then I'd have to call your bluff.
That example is a bit extreme, but it definately makes sense to own something you feel LOOKS good.

I bought the black Rebel because I simply prefer the color black to silver and they were both the same price.
Had the black model been more expensive, I personally would've got the silver one.
A lot of people say that others who are willing to pay extra to get the black are juvenile or stupid.
I don't mind if some pay more to get a different color, not because I wouldn't that it makes others stupid.
I mean, when you buy a car, you choose a color and certain types of paint cost more than others yet, the car remains the same and some are willing to pay more to get a different color.
To each his own.
Bottom line is that both models take the same picture quality but it's nice to be able to choose.

Funny how Canon users regularly need to have this debate. In the Nikon world you don't even have an option of sub-badassness... Maybe you should come over to our camp for a nice cup of black coffee and see how you like it? :)

Yeah, you are right... They don't debate about camera body color they just keep their debates over how many time they have had their D70's replaced... (Da-Dum Kish!)
Thank you, thank you, I am here all week folks. |

The silver looks like the film bodies. The black looks like a 10D. If you care how it looks to outsiders, get a 20D anyways. The D300 doesn't have as good a rep.
:)
(That said, mine are both silver).

I must have missed a few threads... Even at the Nikonians site I haven't seen too many posts about body replacements. There were a few early on with the back focus issue, but that's long been history.
Bottom line is this: No matter which camp you're in badassness is badassness, and the badassness of badassness should never be underestimated.
I'm even thinking an honorary challenge should occur:
"Badassness: Create an image that epitomizes badassness"

There's a thread going on right now with people talking about having their D70's replaced and when I glanced through it I saw a few people talking about how many times their's and people they know have had their D70's replaced. I am sorry that my attempt at humor was poorly received. |

Here in Germany the Black version comes with the battery grip and a USM version of the kit lens. This would mean faster and quieter focusing.
(Or aere the standard lenses also USM?) |

Buy 1 of each and use according to which matches your clothes that day. Not unlike sunglasses. Nothing goes with everything.

Actually I didn't miss the humor, I just spend quite a bit of time reading different sites, and hadn't seen anything significant since the back focus issue, so I was genuinely wondering what I'd missed. A good jib deserves a jab ;)
