Hi everyone,
I wanted to know your availability for a meet up in January. Eric & I were thinking about going to Downtown LA because Pershing Square still has ice skating until Jan 17th. Also, in Feb, Chinatown is having it's Year of the Rooster Parade & Celebration if we can't make it to downtown in Jan.
Here are my best days for a get together:
Jan 8 - Sat Downtown (near Pershing Sq)
Jan 9 - Sun Downtown (near Pershing Sq)
Jan 15 - Sat Downtown (near Pershing Sq)
Jan 16 - Sun Downtown (near Pershing Sq)
Jan 22 - Sat Wherever
Jan 23 - Sun Wherever
Jan 29 - Sat Wherever
Jan 30 - Sun Wherever

OK, this is weird. I swear I posted a reply here and to the Dec 4th thread. Must be some sort of deja vu going on or something. Anywho, I will check which weekends I'm free as I start my work travel schedule all over again that month. I know I need to go to Orlando and maybe someplace else. I'll check and post here.

So, who's in for January? And what dates are good for you all?

I'm still not sure yet - but for me it'd be more likely that I'd be available the second weekend (but possibly the first) that you mention. I may be going on a snowboarding trip that first weekend, but not positive yet.
edit: notice anything new about me? :)

Oh wow, Rebel!!! Great job Brian! Welcome to Canon!!! I can't wait to see your photos with it!!! We'll plan for the 2nd weekend mentioned, but we'll wait a little bit to hear from you about your snowboarding trip!
To all the LA Area DPCers, where do you want to go for the next trip? Do you like the idea of going to Downtown & Pershing Sq or have something better in mind?

yup - I managed to find [what I consider] an even better deal than that pricematch I might have mentioned at El Matador. a local guy was selling his 300D with everything that came in the kit (lens, battery, charger, all manuals, cords, etc) in great condition - I checked it out a little the day before buying it. He also threw in a battery grip (retail ~ $100) and a 128mb no-name CF card - all for $600! Glad he lived so close - after I bought it, I asked if he had other inquiries and he said he had about 10-15 including people from a couple hours away willing to drive out. but, he preferred to sell to me since I only live about 2-3 minutes away. man, do I feel lucky! (assuming nothing breaks in the next week or so ;) )

Man, you totally banked!!! Great job! And great luck!!!! You can use my 70 to 300mm zoom if you want to try it out in January :)
I'll say the 16th is the date for now, and we'll see if the others can all make it during this date too :)

I can't make it the 16th as I'll be in Orlando that weekend since we have a big trade show starting on the 17th. I should be home for the 29th/30th and maybe even for the first few weekends. But the 15th/16th are definitely out for me.
PS: Congrats on the new setup, Brian! I'm sure you'll be very happy with it. Like Arie said, you are also welcome to try out any of my lenses to see how you like them. I have a 50mm macro, 16-35, 24-70 and the 28-105mm. I usually have the 16-35 on the camera and the 24-70 in the bag.

Brian, since Greg can't make it on the 16th, let's see when your snowboarding trip is and we'll figure out a date later. We could do the 29th or 30th if that is better...
Chuck, Eric, Doug, Rod, Mark, anyone else????

Later in January would also be better for me... my daughter has her birthday in mid-January and the weekend of the 22/23 is our wedding anniversary. Hmm...do you think I could convince the wife to give me a day away as a gift? LOL.
In the meantime, I plan on dusting off the camera in the next week and really start using it again. Anyone interested in some impromptu local jaunts? One thing I really want to do is spend a few hours riding the subways and just travelling around. The stations themselves make for some good photo subjects as well.
Edit: typos

I will be back from vacation on the 26th at night. So, anytime that week, I'd be up for some Metro photography!!! :)

sounds good, i'd love to try out some lenses :) - i've been taking some practice shots just around the house though and things seem to be coming out not as sharp as my 717 thus far (with the sharpness set at maximum in the rebel). is this the nature of it, and most images will require post-processing for sharpening and whatnot.. or could it be something else (i know the 717 had a fantastic lens, so maybe i'm expecting too much from the packaged one on the rebel).

I'm good for January 29th...
As for the metro photography, I thought you were talking about December... I'm not sure now if we were on the same page.

Chuck, maybe I misunderstood you, too. When do you want to do the Metro photography thing? was it December or January? Next two weekends are out, naturally, with the exception of the 26th which might be possible. Maybe a few days the week of December 27th. I know I'll be able to meet you January 21-30.

For the metro photography (or any other photography), I was talking about December... the few days after xmas I actually have some free time during the days on December 27, 28 and 29. As for January 29 for a DPC GTG, I am also free, but weekdays in January are tough.
So, any takers for Dec. 27, 28 or 29 as well?
