Its seems like when we talk of comments lately, there is a great deal of negativity...To award and encourage good comments, (which are one of the greatest assets of the site) I would suggest that there be a "Comment of the Day" selected by the site council or some of its members. It could be displayed on the "my home" screen in quotation along with the commenter's screen name.

It could work as simple as a button next to the "helpful" checkmark that says "press here to nominate this post for comment of the day."

Its seems easy and fun and I know everyone would like it. I hope the powers that be consider it.

Hmmm, could be a cool idea... but the comment would likely lose it's impact if you can't see the photo it was given to, and if you could see that photo then it could potentially predjudice the voting.

Maybe one award per challenge or something instead ?? - awarded after the challenge so that you could see the image.

Greetings,
I too like this idea, perhaps the comment of the day could come from whichever challenge has just concluded, also if it is displayed on the "My Home" screen as previously suggested then perhaps by clicking on it, the associated image would automatically be displayed.

Just my thoughts exactly.

I just wrote a LONG reply but IE ate it up. Then I started on another one, but messed that up myself with no help form IE. This is the third (and last try):

OK, here is my suggestion. I order to encourage good comments I think I could be a neat idea to do it this way:
After the challenge you can select ONE (and one only) comment that you recieved during the challenge as your Best comment for the challenge. All so marked (this would be a simple checkbox) are automaticly transfered to a dedicated thread with all the relevant info.
This could look something like this:

Thread title: Best comment for Landmarks

Nominated by: Gauti for
Sun Voyager and the moon

Comment by Kylie: Simply stunning and elegant. Perfect title that enhances it even further.

And the commenter could even get a rating like: Nominated for comment of the the challenge # of times.

Maybe the SC/Admins would have to moderate this thread or the suggestions go through them to make sure nobody posts a comment that's not suitable.

A good idea, but instead of a thread (or in addition to a thread)it oculd appear in someone's profile, something like this:
Comments:
Made: xxxx
Helpful: xxxx
BEST: xxxx
Recieved: xxxx

This may be more valid, since several people say they just mark all comments as helpful. And when I look at an image, I can see which one is considered as the best, which would be helpful to me as a commenter to improve my comments.

Good thread here and good ideas.

Edited for spelling.

I like the final idea the best - think that would be a really great idea without having to have site council review 300 comments to decide which is the best. Though lets face it, in a lot of cases people are simply going to mark their most positive comment as the best.

wow- you guys sure take an idea and work out the kinks and make it seem feasible!
The point about the comment is that is could be a good constructive criticism, a shot with extremely meaningful praise, or a funny comment- or a random thought.
The whole point is that it might spur people to make better or more meaningful comments, and benefit the site and the commenter by a good heaping helping of reputation and respect.

edited for typos/

Im guilty of placing every comment made as helpful - this is because I believe, if you wanna win a ribbon you must please the majority of the voters, so if someone can pick out a problem theres probally lots more people who didin't comment who thought the same.

ps. I like this idea of best comment because lots of people just say "blurry", "not original" and "bad DOF" - which is helpful but not the best comment there

the best one is when someone can pick out the flaws say the best way the picture can be improved with composition, lighting and colour and maybe if they can find some humour in your shoot voting it low cause it reminds them of there mother inlaw or something like that - lol

I personally am of the opinion that we would benefit far more from a few considered comments, and fewer bland five word comments. I would though, as I rarely make comments with anything approaching brevity. I don't like the idea of a comment being able to be marked 'best' however. The art of approaching and assessing a photograph is its own reward.
