I haven't been very involved in the site lately due to a huge number of distractions, good and bad, and I'm way behind on updating my portfolio. I have photos that I've been meaning to post since September that will probably never make it on the site because of space issues, but I thought I would go ahead and upload a few of my recent outtakes.
First off is this Yellow outtake. Personally, I like the shot. I wanted it to be grainy and oversaturated, to have colours that shifted in two different directions, and feel a bit retro, and it came out about like I meant it to. However, it's not really DPC material, and it could have been done much, much better than it was, so I didn't enter it. I've been getting enough subpar scores for trying different things, and this wasn't one that I felt was worth it. It's supposed to demonstrate a balance between green tones and red/orange tones.
These others are all outtakes from the Low Tech challenge, which I had a lot of trouble with because of the topic being extremely subjective. If you go by, say, Wired's standard of Low Tech, anything old or non-digital would pretty much apply. I think many people shot from that angle, and the less high-technologically inclined people went with shots that were so Low Tech as to not really have much to do with technology at all. I ultimately chose an entry that was a compromise between the two - non-electrical, but still a mechanical device. These alternate entries were the extremes on either side.
First, my grandfather's old Polaroid camera. It does take batteries, so I decided it was too electrical to fit the challenge. Also, the reflections on the camera bothered me. The lighting was pretty shoddy.
 
Second, a book. This one happens to be a book of Tennyson's poems, but I was shooting from the angle of the old standard in learning - i.e., education before computers. However, I felt this was too low tech to really fall under any tech category. I was really fond of the 2nd one, too.
