I'm not very familiar with SLR lenses but I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to enlighten me. How much quality would you lose if you added a 1.4 teleconveter on a 50mm prime? I tried searching for the answer but didn't find anything on using a 1.4 specifically. I've found that ppl didn't recommend using a 2x. I believe you would lose 1 stop with a 1.4 TC what else should be considered? The idea was to use the prime and TC on a dslr with a 1.6 crop factor to make a nice inexpensive ~112mm portrait lens.

To the best of my knowledge, you cannot use all of the lenses with the Canon EF teleconverters. I think, for instance, that the 70-200mm can only be used with the 2x converter and not the 1.4x (or vice-versa). I doubt anyone would recommend buying a teleconverter for the 50mm when lenses like the 85mm 1.8 are so cheap.

This is wrong. I have a Canon 1.4x converter and it works just fine with all the Canon 70-200 lenses. The teleconverter works with all Canon EF L lenses above and including the 135mm focal length, and all the L telephoto zooms. I'm not 100% sure if that includes the 180mm macro. Any lens which works with the 1.4x works with the 2x.

You can't use the Canon teleconverters with the short lenses as there's a protruding element on the teleconverter which needs to be accomodated.

My bad. Still, my statement that not every lens works with the teleconverters is correct. And, the 50mm that he is interested in using will not work with either the 1.4 or 2x converters.

BTW, my initial thought about the 70-200mm F4 L not working on the 2x converter had to do with the fact that autofocus does not work on lenses that have aperatures slower than 2.8.

Yes I read about a possible Canon/Canon TC imcompatibility. But I also read that Sigma TCs would accommodate the Canon lenses. I quickly looked at prices for 85mm primes and they seem to be about $350. That doesn't seem all that cheap.

Sorry for being blunt...in the middle of writing end-of-term crap. Autofocus won't work at f/8 max. aperture on bodies without cross-focus sensors, true, but you can still manually focus. The 2x will still physically fit on the lens. There's a solution to block a few of the sensors on the lens with tape, so that you can fool the body into thinking it can still focus. Canon programs the body to not focus at f/8 due to the very poor performance.

Trust me, for a lens as fast as that with USM and picture quality that outstanding, it's a bargain. Try //www.fredmiranda.com for some great reviews of lenses and picture quality ratings (which the 85mm got 4.8 out of 5, uncommon for lenses <$400)

i use the canon 50/1.4 with a tamron 1.4x all the time.

i dont notice any diminished quality. but then again, i dont agonize over all my shots at 100% magnification trying my hardest to detect or imagine some flaw :).

one cool thing about the tamron, btw, is that is that allows autofocus even when used with f/5.6 lenses - it lies to the camera and passes back the lenses aperture, not the effective aperture.

As Mag stated, the Tamron 1.4x will work on the 50/1.4. The Tamron is also very well-respected; you don't even need to buy the expensive version, I have the "standard" $75 1.4x from Tamron and I doubt I'll ever buy the Canon.
I think the 50/1.4 and the Tamron 1.4x is a fine combination for portrait use, and keeps the weight in your bag down as well!
