This will be a short Q & A time:
Can the Nikon D70 support remote flashes? And are these also called "slave flashes"? Or is that with something else??
Thanks again... |

The D70 officially supports only the SB600 and SB800 flashes, because it uses a new iTTL wireless triggering system. Certainly there are other options though:
1. Put a plain old manual flash in the hot shoe. Use it to fire other plain old flashes with optical slave attachements (like the Wien peanut slave).
2. Maybe you can use the onboard flash to trigger remote slaves? The preflash used for metering can confuse slaves though. 'Digital slave' flashes are available which are supposed to ignore the preflash though. |

Hi,
Yes, the D70 will support remote flash - very effectively using SB-600 or SB-800. The D70's built in flash is set to command mode to activate however many 600/800's you have set up (the manual recommends 3 as a max), or you can use an 800 on the hotshoe/connected by cable as the "command." The only limitations on the 600 is it's inability to be the "command" on a D70 and a slightly lower guide No.
I use 2 SB-800's.
Hope this helps. |

Out of interest, I'm assuming that (for a cheapskate like me!) you could go for a cheap slave unit plugged into a cheap generic flash and save yourself about £200 on an SB600 - just let the on-board flash trigger the slave.
Alternatively, would a cheap PC hotshoe terminal do the trick? How proprietry is the Nikon hotshoe?

How do you set up the sb-800 for a remote flash? Do you have to have an on-board flash to be able to be able to use a slave flash? |

If you are wanting to use the SB-800 as the remote flash, the D70 has to be in commander mode (will use the built-in flash) and the SB-800 has to be set as a remote. Search the forums, as there are multiple explanations on how to check all the settings, or check the manual for the D70 and SB-800.
Here is one of your previous threads that has some info for setting up for remote flash.
