I visited NYC this past weekend. I think I got some decent shots and thought I would share them. Would especially love comments or C.C. left on the images. Thanks a bunch. Hope you enjoy.
The butterflies were at the Butterfly Conservatory in the American Museum of Natural History. They have a great variety and display area. I would recommend visiting the museum if you have a chance.
Thanks for viewing.

The first pic was almost my landmark challenge entry. But as I was being tossed about the crowd ( first weekend the tree was up ), a 5 year old child started punching me over and over again in the thigh because he wanted to stand where I stood. The mother, seeing her child throw me a savage beating so close to Christmas, had this to say "Ricky stop it, that's not nice", but nothing to say to me.
No apology, no idea to make her son apologize to teach him a valuable lesson. Nothing.
AND, I let it ruin my shot and I walked away. YOU on the other hand probably took this picture without being punched by tiny little fists of fury, and you did a marvelous job.

Robert - Your story really made me laugh. It's funny how some people just don't care. She would have cared if you had swatted her kid back, though! Sorry you had a unpleasant experience there. It's really too bad that you gave up the shot because of the brat. :-)
Ara - Thanks so much for the comments and for being completely honest. I'm glad you were. I'll have to check out the green cast. I hadn't noticed one. I was disappointed about the angel's wing in the second shot too, but I don't have another from that angle. :-/ The first two shots were taken in the rain. I had my camera in my coat and only took it out to get the shots. I wanted to use my wide angle lens but used the less expensive lens instead! The Trinity Church shot (and the other "tipping" shots) were taken with a Sigma 12-24mm not a tilt-shift.
As for the museum, I had no trouble at all taking pictures of anything. I did not use a tripod however. They were all taken handheld with my 70-300mm macro. These images were not cropped or adjusted in any way. I resized them and sharpened for viewing only. I didn't want to carry the tripod all over town...and with the strict rules now, it wasn't worth the hassle. I loved the butterfly conservatory and could've spent a lot longer in there. (Dress light! It's hot in there!) It did cost extra ($10 extra?) to view the butterflies. They also have a new frog exhibit but I didn't get a ticket for that. I think that may have been another $10 or so. They have a ton of butterflies on exhibit. All different kinds, shapes, and colors. I went to a butterfly conservatory at the Rochester, NY Zoo back in September but they had very few (like, you had to search for them it was so bad!) and most of them had damaged wings. I was not impressed with that zoo at all. The cages were small, animals looked unhappy, and they were pacing. But that's a whole other story...
If you go, please let me know what you thought of it and share your shots!
Thanks again for the comments, guys!

Thank you for sharing your moments in New York. For those of us who have not visited some amazing cities like this, it gives us a glimpse of what we could experience if we stepped outside our everyday lives. For anyone else who has some amazing urban captures please share regardless...especially if you want to share some remote locale needing to be discovered. |
