I believe comments, in order to be helpful, have to point out the negative aspects of a photo along with the positive. That said, I find it a little annoying that most comments with any negative remarks are not marked helpful. I truely do not wish to be harsh about anyones work, simply constructive. Do any of you find this to be the case for the comments that you offer? Anyone see anything wrong with my comments or have any recommendations for improvement?

Thanks.
Darlene

I'm really in no position to judge what someone else finds "helpful" -- I pretty much ignore it as a personal thing ...

I usually forget the buttons are even there.

People don't like my sparse use of the 'helpful' buttons, they don't like my lack of favorite images or favorite photographers, they don't like my lack of descriptive comments, they don't like....anything. There's a reason the general public has such a bad rep for being hard to please.

The 'helpful' comment thing is useless. Nobody uses it properly, so I just check them all off once I've read them...

Huh?!? It doesn't sound like you're making even the slightest effort to please the general public.

and...should I be? Why would my personal selections even matter to the GP? I believe the idea of satisfying the general public is even more elusive than a clear photo of Big Foot.

This one isn't too bad...

GB- I just thought it ironic that you don't mark constructive criticism as helpful, don't offer helpful comments of your own, and don't find a single photo on this site worthy of a favorite, then say that the general public is hard to please. ;-)

I just check all the comment helpful box to acknowledge to the commenter that I have read his/her comment. Simple courtesy, they have taken time to comment my photo, I can tick the box to say I have seen their comment.

Hey, but she has 8 photographers as her favorites. Why to add their photos while you just look at their portfolios too see all their pics?
Nothing wrong with that.

oh yes there is...it's in the tos: you have to pick at least one fave a day for an average of 365 per year, or you get booted. so, if you are behind, you need to get out there and start picking faves, now, rather than participating in forums!

;-)

She's made more comments on photos then you :)

P.S. even more ironic, is that the points you made above aren't even similar to what I initially wrote.

Edit: for some reason I've posted twice..sorry! This comment is for Scalvert.

What about this one?

(I feel like I should make a joke about the General Public as well, but I'll let the opportunity pass.

(sorry Paul...couldn't resist) :)

Yeah, I forgot about that. I guess it would be more useful than making comments. :-D

Not bad, not bad at all. As for the joke, I'd be careful. People who generalize suck.

A few more, but less were helpful, she's been a member longer than I have, and I never suggested that I was trying to please the public. I do need to comment more, though.

OK- that last one should have been qualified (I was just going by what you wrote). I'm not attacking you, GB... you've made plenty of valuable contributions to this site. I just found what you wrote to be ironic. It certainly didn't sound like you were going out of your way to please the general public.

I didn't realize there is a time-line.

P.S. I'm not a member. I'm just here till I get kicked out for not picking the required number of favorites. hehehehe
