"oh my god this is boring."
This is the first anonymous comment I have ever recieved. It is on my current entry in the Broken Challenge. It is probably also the least enlightened comment I have recieve in all of my challenges here(25 + 2 currently running).
Ok, so my image is not that great, running around 4.8.
I am curious if the anonymous feature has had a similar effect on the comments others are recieving? |

The comment isn't really "anonymous". The identity of the commenter is just temporarily hidden until the voting period is over. At that point, the identity will be revealed, and you are free to engage in a discussion (via PM) with the commenter about your photo and their comment if you so desire.

Or they just don't think their comment was that bad...there's a lot worse they could've said instead of "boring".

Maybe the commenter is under the mistaken impression that the comments are permanently anonymous? I turned on the "anon" feature immediately after it was made available and don't think it's caused the quality of my comments to degrade.
I haven't entered a pic into a challenge in the last two weeks so have not received any anonymous comments yet myself.

I understand that the comments are not permanently anonymous. I think it is interesting that the poorest quality comment I recieved was under the cover of anonymous.
Trust me, I have entered some pretty poor images. Even so, none of those have recieved this type of comment. And while the comment is not horrible or anything, it is a bit pointless.
There is something about attaching your name to a comment that adds a big sense of responsibility. |

If a shot is boring and uninspiring in the viewer's opinion, what else is there to say other than that it is boring? Do you really want them to go into details about composition, light and subject matter? I wouldn't.
That wasn't my comment on your pic, but i sometimes say that the picture is plain boring or not creative, and i don't personally see anything wrong with that.

I will frequently use the word "uninteresting" to describe such a photo when commenting. I think it's less offensive than "boring" but that is a fine distinction, more related to preference than linguistics.
Also (I've said it before), I mark every comment helpful, no matter how profound or simplistic it is, simply because I love having people respond to my photos, no matter what their response. Any response, even an obscenity or epithet, is a response. For me, it's one of the best reasons to participate here.

It wasn't my comment either, but when a shot is boring, I will sometimes say the "shot doesn't hold my interest." Means it's boring to me but is a bit more respectful, in my opinion. |
