My copy of Photos That Sell: The Art of Successful Freelance Photography by Lee Frost, Elyse Weissberg, and Amanda Sosa has just arrived, and it looks sweet! Essentially, the book is a guide to creating photos that are appealing enough to sell, along with how to go about selling them etc. There are plenty (250+) colour images, along with "expert advice" from successful freelancers, and analysis of their bestselling images.
The book covers each type of photo in a separate chapter (eg nature & scenics, people & lifestyle, business & finance), along with dealing with commisioned work, photo libraries, and speculative selling.

Given that these challenges are basically popularity contests, plus many members currently sell their photos on DPCPrints, this book is well worth a read. Heck, the pictures alone are enough to inspire me to try new things :o)

So are you now going to win lots of ribbons with your new found knowledge?
The book I want to read is Photos that Win: The art of successfully taking Ribbon worthy shots at DPC

Like I said, it's not too far off that already...

Manic,

I'd thought about buying a copy of that, but have not yet got round to it. When you have had time to have a good read I would appreciate your thoughts on the 'wisdom' in the book.

I'll also keep a close eye on your ribbon tally ;-)

he has some other books that look interesting.
I juest read one by the same publisher (amphoto)...it has helped me more than everything else to date except maybe my camera manual :0.

Should i get the book? (the one you got) - I mean, will it help me take / compose/think better photographically?

If you've already got something similar, maybe not, but give me a couple of days to read it through thoroughly, and I'll give you an updated opinion.

I got a book on Photographic Composition. It has opened my eyes quite a bit. I can already compose better shots - i am interested to see how my yellow entry finishes as the pic has some terible flaws, I was trying a composition idea, and based on my comments i succeeded. If i can only brown ribbon with it now!

My landmark entry, while to me a very pretty pic, was in the bottom 10%. I did not apply my kowledge to it. My broken entry again uses my knowledge and is doing well ...well, better than my recent entries. No comments so far.

The local booksellers have crap for photo books, and finding stuff on Amazon is easy, but judging it's 'quality' so to speak is difficult.

My library doesn't have that particular title, but I found several others on freelance photography, shooting for stock or travel photos, etc. -- I suggest checking there before spending the money ...
