Alright, the D300 seems to have a rating to only 32F before it's gonna have problems working. I'm going to china for all of January, and I hear that it can get significantly colder than that in certain areas like the great wall for example. Is there anyway to keep the camera opperational? My mother suggested those hand warmer packets. Any other tips or tricks to keep that shutter clicking when the thermometer hits rock bottom?

edit: I had thought of getting a REALLY cheap film SLR body and a few rolls of film to use for the cold, I was wondering if they had the same problem? I really don't wanna spend money if I can make the digital work though.

The main problem you are going to run into is battery life...a lot lower in the cold. Keep the spare batteries in your shirt pocket to keep them warm.

As you swap them out, put the low batteries in an inside shirt pocket as well, body heat will revive them a bit.

I don't think it will be too much of an issue. My wife uses her D300 well above the max temp with no problems here in AZ. When the engineers put the min/max temp on products, they usually pad it pretty good just to be safe.
Battery life will be an issue in exteme cold, as already noted. If you can keep the camera inside your jacket when not shooting it would help alot.

I use my cameras in cold weather all the time. We live in a cold place and it won't be above 32 degrees F until next March. I keep the camera around my neck with the strap and zip my coat up over it until I want to take a picture. I've been outside taking pictures when it is right at 0 degrees and below and have not had a problem.

My batteries don't even seem to run down any faster in cold weather. I do always carry several extra batteries.

I had heard somewhere that the shutter on some cameras stop working at low temps, I wasn't sure if this was an issue with this camera. I'm just trying to be safe, i'd hate to go to the great wall and find that I can't take pictures!
