I just had to start the thread even before game time, simply cause I won't be around to do it later. I'm getting ready to leave for Pittsburgh. I'm hoping to catch up to Alan before game time and beg him for some more fantastic photos of Troy...lol you all know how I adore Troy. Unlike Alan I can't take all my gear in to the stadium. I'm only premitted a small camera bag. So I got to say say PLEASE Alan photos of TROY waiting on me when I get home late tonight.
In the meantime, I predict the Pats, Eagles, Jacksonville and Saints will all win today...I'm not commenting on the Steelers/Jets games but that should be obvious who is going to win. |

Factoid:
The Patriots could finish the year 15-1, thus winning approximately 31 out of their last 32 and STILL not get homefield advantage in the playoffs.
And if the J E T S JETS JETS JETS can pull off the game today, they would set up an interesting matchup with the Pats to see if they could do the same thing to them.
Anyone can beat anyone else on any given week. That's why it's interesting.
GO JETS (just for today)
GO EAGLES! GO anyone who beats the Rams too.

I think that they are overrated in the fact that they only have one win against a winning team this year. However, Curtis Martin is one of the best rushers this year and Chad Pennington is back and he's on fire. The Jets defence has also improved over the year and especially since last year as they have improved their rushing defense.
So although they may be overrated, i still think that they are in high contentino for at least a playoff spot.

Greetings,
As a long time (I remember the days of Steve Grogan) Patriots fan, I have only one wish for xmas this year that requires a little attention from "Santa" A JETS WIN OVER THE STEELERS!!!!!!! for that will bring them to Foxboro in Jan, for the playoffs and some sweet revenge! (Best served cold, very cold, in Foxboro, with a side of snow!) The rest of the Pat's season should not be that much of a challenge, and frankly it looks like the Jets have the best, perhaps only chance of Pitt's remaining opponents to hand them a loss, so GO JETS!!!!!!
Mike

We're getting the game live in the UK too : )
Problem is I've kinda followed the Jets (as much as someone who's never been to America can follow any NFL team) since I first started watching the game almost 20 years ago.
I think the Jets need this one more than the Steelers, and hey, I always like cheering for the underdog : )

Damn. That Bettis TD pass was a sweet call.
A quick question that was asked on the UK coverage last week, but never answered ... why is the Steelers logo only on one side of the helmet?

The practice of painting logos on helmets dates to 1948, when Fred Gehrke, halfback for the then-Los Angeles Rams, painted horns on the sides of the team's helmets. Gehrke was an artist on and off the field, equally adept at broken field running and brush strokes . . . I'm sorry, I can't resist the NFL-films-type patter. I'm humming "Drunken Sailor" as I type this. As the league entered the 50's, many teams adopted decorated helmets, although the Pittsburgh franchise went with a fairly spartan gold-helmet-with-the-players'-numbers-on-both-sides motif. In 1962, Republic Steel, located in Cleveland (ack! ptooi!) suggested to Steelers owner Art Rooney that they place the "steel" logo on their helmets. This logo, used by the American Iron and Steel Institute, is three hypocycloids (curvy-looking stars, for you amateurs) in a circle with the word "steel," changed to "Steelers" for the helmet. You can see where it's a natural, even though the idea came from Cleveland, the mistake on the lake, home of the hated Browns.
However, when the logos arrived, Steelers management wasn't sure how they looked on an all gold helmet. So equipment manager Jack Hart was told to place the emblems on only one side, so as to minimize the graphic impact of the design--half of the helmet would look like it always did. As it happened, that season the Steelers posted their best record, 9-5, finishing second in the Eastern Conference and earning a playoff berth, the first ever for Rooney's squad. Because of this, and because the one-sided helmet was unique among NFL teams, the design stuck. Rooney decided to celebrate the occasion by premiering the now familiar black helmet in the subsequent playoff game, paving the way for immaculate receptions, terrible towels, and four Super Bowl victories. Mmm-ha! Yoi, and double yoi!

Yeah, I remember those days too. As a matter of fact, I had seasons tix to the Jets Games from about 1971 till they moved to the NJ Meadowlands in 1984. These were the Joe Namath years. He gave us one good year 1968-69, the super bowl and the rest was all downhill from there. Namath was injured most of the time and it was the Jets and the Pats fighting it out every year for last place in the eastern division. Even before Steve Grogan was the QB they had Jim Plunkett, a big bust in the NFL, even though he did win a super bowl with the raiders in the twighlight of his career. The only highlight in the 13 years I came to watch the Jets was the horribly cold day that OJ Simpson broke the 2,000 yard barrier that no back had done before. Thank goodness he broke the record in the first quarter, or early in the 2nd, because if I had to stay the entire game, I would have certainly frozen stiff in my seat.
Football was my passion as a spectator and school yard player, but these days I don't follow it at all because I've grown disenchanted with the game today...but that's another story. Thanks for the memories and all you fans enjoy the remaining games up untill the Super Bowl. It's a great time of the year for football!
