Just got my new Panasonic FZ20 yesterday (12/9/04) and the camera is making a constant soft low pitched hum once powered on. Anyone else who has this camera experiencing the same thing? (no response from Panasonic yet)

It sounds like you might have the continuous auto focus on so the camera is contantly searching for a focus.

I just powered mine up and it makes a very low sound if you hold it right next to your ear. It does make more sound if I turn the continuous auto focus on.

Welcome to dpc Rob, and to the FZ20 gang.

I suppose that the Image Stabilization may also be making some noise if you have it set to be in operation all the time. I have mine set so that it is enabled only when I half push the shutter button. I don't hear any constant sound from my FZ20 (but I went to lots of loud concerts when I was younger so your ears are likely more sensitive than mine, lol). Disable CAF and IS, and then see if you still hear the hum when the shutter is half-pushed. There should be nothing going on at that point once the green dot appears in the viewfinder indicating that focus has locked.

Last night I had turned off both CAF and IS. Sammie is experiencing what I am. If you hold the barrel up to your ear, you can hear a soft humming even with the options listed above turned off.

I have tested my FZ20 in every mode with and without the CAF and IS1 and IS2 on. The only time I hear the noise is when the camera first comes on [ about 1 or 2 sec. ] after that it is completely quite. I tested in a completely silent room.
I don't know what may be going on with your problem. OR if that's is the way it should be and mine is having a problem. ??????

I think the soft humming sound is normal. I have to hold the camera right up to my ear to hear it. Just turned on my FZ10 and it does the same thing so I think it's pretty much just a normal thing.
