I am anxious to hear any comments or suggestions on making these two photos better. I would also like suggestions on mats for both photos. Thanks in advance!

feel free to process either photo.

The both look good but how about this to bring out the cats eyes.

I liked the cat picture, but... You cropped out his claw....

I am in love with the cat photo!! I'm adding it to my favorites. I love the focus and the color. I also like the crop and border, I think you did a great job. I also like the color in the tree photo, but I'm not a huge fan of tree photos :o)

edit: you need to retitle the cat photo so I can add it to my fav's. and I like how you cropped out the claw.

Cat photo is great, the face needed to be lightened though. Looks even better now!

Thanks for compliments on my little buddy Hooper! He definitely makes me smile. Im not very good with titles. Any suggestions?

I definitely like the suggestion about they eyes. He is a very impatient subject. He does not like to stay still...haha.

As far as the tree picture goes...I love being out in nature. I love the colors in the picture...I have an 11x14 of it now and it looks great...I think I want to go bigger.

Both shots well composed, like the symmetry and colors of the tree shot. I'm not a huge cat photo fan, but this is really well done. Colors and compostion are great. Nice work!

You have beautiful cats, BTW. I don't know what colors you have around you in your home or colors you like, but I think a light grass green or a willow shade would look beautiful. SDW65's edit really looks nice, too.

I'm not a fan of cat photos, but this is pretty good. From a composition standpoint I'm wondering if it would have been better to keep the paw in the frame and maybe crop the ear a bit. This would have moved the eyes closer to the right lower "thirds" intersection. As it is you have more space to the right of the creature and it's lighter which draws attention.

What exactly did you do to bring out the eyes?

Sorry it took me so long to reply:
1. I duplicated lay.
2. With duplicate layer, desaturate.
3. Then invert duplicate layer.
4. Go to filters and Gaussian blur 20%.
5. Then blend layers using Overlay.
6. Go to layers and flatten image.
7. Use Lasso tool and circle eyes.
8. Got to Hue/Saturation and select ‘yellow’ and bump up about 10 to 15.
And that̢۪s it. It lightens up some of the dark areas and really brings out the eye color.

I'm ok up to the 'blend layers using overlay'...........there's colour overlay, gradient overlay, pattern overlay....what do I do?

Am trying this out on a doggie pic which has some very dark areas on one side of his face

thanks Scott

you could do all that...or you could just use the dodge tool.

set your Range: Highlights, and your Exposure: 3%

set your brush size a bit smaller than the cat's eyes, then use broad strokes over the parts you want to dodge (lighten). you'll have to go over it with the brush several times.

Because you set the tool to "highlights" it will only lighten the lighter parts, and the darker parts will stay dark.

Photoshop is a creative beast. There are many ways to...uh...skin a cat. :D

My 60 second dodge:

edit: this should look about the same as Scott's version, it just took way fewer steps (no offense Scott - I just figure the fewer steps involved, the less likely it is I'll screw it up).
