DPC's own arnit shot James Brown at a concert he did in Iceland this summer (JB survived....). He was shooting for Iceland´s biggest newspaper and one of his great shots was on the cover of the paper. You should check out his James Brown shots: arnit photos of the king of soul

Oh the irony, the thread title is "i feel good" when I really feel nothing like "good". lol
I have no choice but to use the 75-300..except for the binoculars on a disposable as previously suggested ;-)
With no credit and no cash, unless the stores take magic seeds, I'm SOL. On a side note, does anyone have any magic seeds to loan me? Ah come on! I'm good for it :-) |

Wish I lived closer and could lend my lens. I'm a wreck wondering what the heck you're going to do. Hope we don't have to wait until tomorrow to hear the news.
Whatever happens, I hope you have a good time! |

I shot a concert 2 weeks back and used the 50mm f/1.8 and my 70-200mm f/4 L. Used ISO 800-3200 (mostly 1600, 3200 on a few too grainy shots). Ended up using the zoom lens for most of the show and am pretty pleased with the outcome. The f/4 is a light lens compared to the f/2.8 ones and it was no pain holding for a whole show.

How did it go??
I can sympathise with you, as I know how it is when you don't have money, and you seem to be getting such great opportunities! |

Hey all! Thanks for the concern! I'm here to tell you I survived the ordeal. The concert was great, I was the only photographer for Jacksoul and then the big-wigs showed up right when James Brown was about to come on...of course they b*tched and complained about not being allowed in thte middle, I just quietly went to the other side and shot alone. Which was cool.
The problem is, I got tons of great shots EXCEPT the dang 75-300 is soooo sensitive that a lot of the shots have at least a little motion blur. I haven't looked at 50% of the shots yet, but I had to bring them to the paper half-way through the concert so they could get ready to print today.
From what I saw there were definetly printable shots, I think they may put one or two online, if they do, I'll post a link.
I was REALLY impressed shooting at 1600 for Jacksoul, zero noise.
Doesn't really matter when the shots are blurry, however. Lesson learned. And as a sidenote, my gracious parents have decided to 'donate' a lens to my cause with the agreement I pay them back a percentage from every gig I use it for.
:-)
Merry Christmas! |

Hey Mel, Thanks!
No Charla didn't go, we're not working together anymore..she's sort of retired (for now) and she's not into the same sort of stuff as me.
$800 was half the lens price! CRAZY! They figured it was better to help finance me now then to get a call down the road asking to borrow money after I break someone else's :-) Again. |

That's the same outfit he wore last night! (and the guy on guitar is h-o-t).
My shots are similar accept a lot have blur, which is really really irritating/frustrating. Unfortunately! |

Great to hear it went well. But why no tripod/monopod? Looking forward to seeing some shots. |

That would've pretty much been impossible from where we were shooting from. The guys from the big papers never used one either..they just had faster lenses. That was my only problem, the lag on the 75-300 is a big factor. A faster lens would've solved the problem. |

They probably had IS too. If you haven't tried a monopod, I highly recommend one; in my opinion they go just about everywhere, easy to carry, quick to setup, and are less restrictive than tripods movement and speed wise; they aren't quite as good at tripods for stabilization, but probably as good or better than IS.
I was surprised to hear you say that you got "no noise" from ISO 1600! I bought my Canon for that reason (CMOS), but I've found the noise even at 800 to be less than acceptable in dim environments (there seems to be less noise visible when using these speeds outdoors, in daylight, to get a higher shutter speed).
It's too late now for the news print versions, but if there's a great shot with some movement blur you need to recover, try "FocusMagic". I've posted some samples of how well this works for that elswhere in the forums, and I finally bought it. It can save a shot that otherwise is ruined. The trial version will let you do 3 or 4 for free.

I do own a monopod but we were all standing on a little ledge on the front of the stage, most of the time i was stretching out over speakers. That's why I said the shooting conditions werent' condusive to a mono/tripod.
My lens was also IS, but on the long end wide open it's slow. Really slow. It was the first big zoom IS Canon made..the new versions are much faster.
The paper edited all the shots, they have some professionals on staff, I'm sure they did a good job. |
