ok, I've only had my d70 for like a month and i've been loving and learning with it, and would love to start making money off of it someday. I have had some experience with film photography too and my digital p/s...so i've been into it for a little bit. Here's my problem- since getting my new setup i've been getting all of these opportunities to do shoots, but I just don't know if I should take them yet? I wouldn't consider myself a good photographer, and just mildly proficient with my new camera. I am proud of some of the work I've done though. I've gotten asked to do pictures for a marketing company's holiday party, 1 big concert at the metro in chicago (the 'it' place for up and coming bands) promo shoots for 2 bands, pictures for a new book idea in Chicago, and be a back up photog for my friends wedding (not till june though) all within the past few weeks. Anyways just wondered if anyone had any advice? I'd hate to turn down good opportunities but at the same time I wish I could put it all off and wait till I was more confident in the job I could do, and could put more time into it. I have college to be concerned about in the mix of all this. Any tips would help!

Just go ahead and do it. If you fuck up, you'd know how and why unless you were stoned to the bone. Next time you'd do better and before you know it, you'd be great :)
(You don't really have to listen to me, but I thought I'd say it anyway) |

Surely you wouldn`t be offered these gigs if the people offering them didn`t think you were up to it?
If I was offered even one of these, I`d jump at it.

Some good photographers don't have jobs lined up like you have. Why not go
ahead and except the jobs and see what becomes of it. |

I have a number of thoughts.
My first is try using paragraphs as it helps other ti read your request.
That out of the way. The question is when are we ready to take the plunge. I am facing the same issue with a potential business venture. So I will try and draw some parallels
One or two small projects are always a good way to start, providing you have some confidence in your own capabilities. If you feel you are then go fo it, as the only way to learn how you will cope, is to do it.
You may have to put in many hours at the beginning, for very little financial return, but you will gain experience in many different area. |

Id do the bands without hesitation. Theyre up and coming bands and youre an up and coming photographer.
EDIT: the band fall out boy came from chicago. (not sure if you heard of them, but theyre becoming bigger.)

If you want to do the shoots, then do them. Be honest with them by telling them what your experience is and work with each of them towards what they want as the end product.
Lay out a plan for each shoot, ask them if this is what they want, and do your best.
Be sure to get some money for each one and don't take too little. How much is up to you. I might start out at $50/hour and give them electronic, edited copies of the best images. If you are going to produce prints, that cost would be on top of your hourly cost.
After you improve you can begin charging more. I've done a couple of weddings, the first one I did free with a friend that had done them before, but I haven't done any other gigs like you're talking about.
edited: added paragraphs!

Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it.
There will be bumps along the way, that's how you learn.
Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it.
Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it.
Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it.
Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it. |

i would agree, if you're offered, doIT! :)
if you have any doubts about how well you'll do the shoot, offer to do it free, or cheaper or something, maybe for the first few, until you're completely confident.
i'd say give it a shot, what've you got to lose?
