I need advice on PhotoShop color management.

I have purchased the SpyderPRO and calibrated my monitor. I now have a monitor "profile" that I can use. The question is ... SHOULD I???

In PhotoShop it defaults to some sRGBxxxx color space. And if I change my default to the one generated for my monitor, then whenever I open an image I get a warning about the color space being different.

So that makes me think that I should leave PhotoShop's monitor setting to the sRGBxxx value.

One more question: I have downloaded the color profile (ICC file) for a certain printer. Where would I use that???

Thanks for any advice.

Absolutely use the profile. That's why you have the Spyder. The Spyder looks at the colors the monitor flashes at it and says, "I see Pantone Color xxx." The computer then says, "No, the color I showed you was xxy," and makes an adjustment so the colors that you see on the monitor are the same colors as what the computer thinks you see. That is, by it's very nature, different than the imbedded colors in Photoshop because it's custom to your monitor.

UUuuuuuuuurrrrrchhhhh! Stop, hold on, and wait. The Spyder is to calibrate your MONITOR. You need to set up the COMPUTER to use that profile for the MONITOR, NOT in Photoshop.
PS you want to use either the sRGB 2.xxxxxxx, sRGB, Adobe RGB, PhotoPro RGB or another (depending on what and how you want to use the image for). NOT the monitor profile, and not a printer profile. You do and you are going to get funky results.
The printer profile can be used to Soft Proof your shot BEFORE sending it to print, and then using that printer profile in the Print Preview box (Output) when ready to print.

I mentioned this in the "printer madness" thread I posted, but this link and the links within it have a great step by step article on color management. Unfortunately for both of us they don't like the Spyder, but if your monitor is relatively new you should still be okay with it. I followed the instructions in the link and today for the first time I got a print that matched what I saw onscreen. After which my printer promptly went insane, but that wasn't because of my color management- it was great! Good luck.

Thanks for the articles, I think I understand it now. The proof will be in the prints!
