im just about finished with my website maxj.net
As I have been looking around at some other peoples websites here at dpc, I have noticed that some people have a small legal disclaimer at the bottom of their website, something like " © of Soandso. All photos on this site are to sole property of Soandso." Does just saying this actually bear any legal weight, or is it just pointless babble? |

If you send the files you have created to a copyrighting company. Then it bears legal weight, If you dont sent your files in, it dosen't coount.

You can file your copyright with the Copyright Office, but you own the copyright as soon as you fixed your idea in tangible medium (such as the html file for your site). The problem is damages - if someone steals your work and you haven't filed, the proof is a helluva lot harder that it was yours than if you have filed. Putting the copyright notice DOES serve warning on people that it's yours and there ARE ways to make this benefit you.

I'm pretty sure it's illegal to take anyone's picture from any website and use it to benefit yourself in some way without their permission. No doubt, it happens, but pretty sure it's illegal still.
That being said, how hard would it be to bring the file on a CD-ROM to court if you had to and pull it up in adobe photoshop on a projector and show the exif information to the judge who would then find in your favor (if it ever got to that point anyway)?
