As a recent poster of a "woody" photograph (and wouldn't my dear old Mom be proud to read that line), I can vouch for the ease of a photoshoot with wooden dolls. Less to their advantage in photography, they don't have exact proportions (arms tend to be longer than more people) and they are much more reflective than most models with whom I've worked. On the plus side, they are easier to get into my home studio than a 20 year old model or a seventeen year old with her mother and father in tow. I've shot outdoors portraits pretty extensively and meeting models (both minor and adult) in a public setting is much easier to do than trying to get someone to come over to your house so that you can take them up to the unused bedroom or down to the basement just so that you can "try out your lighting" equipment. Woody costs between $5-10 USD and he really doesn't care how it all looks to the neighbors (or perhaps she doesn't, I never really checked the gender of the mannequin). Until I can afford to shell out a few hundred bucks just on the off chance that I'll catch enough work to support that cost to my hobby, I'll be shooting my indoor studio work out of the house and that tends to require (A) models with whom you have a VERY solid rapport, (B) pretty close acquaintances, who generally don't want you showing off photos of them, (C) family members who tend to either be burned out on the whole thing especially considering the money you spent on your hobby rather than buying their kid some super cool present at his/her last birthday or (D) a wooden doll who will let you test lighting and photos for hours on end 'cause they're just too darned dumb to know the difference.

Its just an inexpensive and socially expedient way in which to learn indoor lighting/flash/strobe composition.

Hummm... I don't know if you saw the "humor" challenge, but as we speak, Woody is being held hostage and we might never see him again if the kidnappers don't get a ribbon!

Funny you should post...I have entered 3 challenges and you've commented on all three with constructive comments (thank you), but you haven't been fond of my pictures. Granted my first two were rushed I'm not overly fond of them myself. My third by far is my best (current 7's challenge, avg score is at 5.475), but much room to improve. I was joking with my wife that one of DPC goals for 2005 was to enter a picture that Snackwells likes...lol.

Keep up the great feedback.

Agree with the props point, but still drives me nuts.

Hi Shawn! A 5.475 is a good score, and I saw your recent additions to your portfolio and I especially like your Last Leaf photo. The others were very tastefully composed as well. I'd like to see how you put that D70 to use when you get it.

Stop using Woody? How on earth could you say such a thing? That's exactly what Woody is for. I was just about to suggest a challenge with Woody as the subject. Might be kinda fun.

I got a woody yesterday.
I mean, a Woody.
I have named him Woodee - he IS an individual.
Photos later...he is in makeup now getting ready. Vain, isn't he?

If the challenge was Woody vs. the Flamethrower it would be fun.

I've only used my Woody for one challenge...

I got him for drawing, but I had an idea, so I had to dig him out from the depths of my room.

Collaborative Project 19: Woody ........

Seriously, I think that DPC should add a woody dedicated gallery to the browse section.

I love this thread =)
I might be the only person on DPC who doesn't own a Woody. I don't think I'll be buying one anytime soon either.

For those of you who don't know what the real purpose of a wooden drawing mannequin (yes that is Woody's real name) in the challenge is, allow me to enlighten you some about Woody.

As previously mentioned here the mannequin allows for a quick set up but it really goes a lot deeper. These mannequins are practically abused by the art world in more ways than just photos. Artists use them in the learning process to learn to draw. Walter Foster drawing books teach using the mannequin as a basic and the you eleborate from there. In sculpting they use these mannequins as a guide to body shape.

Photography students use the mannequin cause they are much more practical than a model and a lot more economical not to mention they will do anything you ask of them. Photo students learn rather quickly that the drawing mannequin is an expert teacher in learning how to set up lights, what different filters and lenses will do as well as other aspects of photography.

Outside of the student photographer lots of professional photographers love Woody when testing lights and other equipment cause they aren't paying for using someone elses time. Woody is very photogenic and artistic so next time you see Woody don't go blastic that there is another one of those Wooden drawing mannequin but rather embrace Woody for the abused creature that he really is.

Those of you who don't like Woody go get one or get a Barbie if you are afraid of the wooden mannequin and play. You will find out you start to learn a lot while using one.

LOTS and LOTS of Woody photos from the site there.

I think that's illegal, except in Nevada. ;-)

You aren't alone. I don't own a Woody and have no plans to buy one either. Unless for some odd reason I run out of firewood.
