Are there any guidelines regarding asking one or two dpc folks whose work I respect to give some feedback and opinion on photos I would be contemplating entering into a challenge? (of course it would be done via personal message...not on a common forum.)

Just to ask first and do it discreetly, as you describe : ) |

Hi,
I believe the answer is NO without express permission from the administrators here is the reason. For those one or two people to give you an opinion or feedback about a photo your ‘contemplating’ entering in to a challenge you would have to give them detail of the photograph and or editing work done. By doing so you have placed a name to that photograph. If you enter the challenge then those one or two people knows it’s your work, therefore it has no anonymity to whom you have shared the photo with. We are not to divulge our photograph to anyone even in the forums. If we send them PM it gives them our user name. And with the new rules [Ownership section below] in place under the last sentence its goes into some of this detail saying if you wish to collaborate with other about your submission you will need to have express permission from the administrators beforehand.
Good luck I wish you the best.

Ownership: The photograph you enter must be taken and post-processed by you. You may let someone else press the shutter if you are unable to, but you must be the one who set up the shot and configured the camera. If you wish to collaborate with others when creating your submission, you will need express permission from the administrators beforehand.

There is no restriction on sharing your photos with anybody, including your family or another DPC member. "Anonymity" is a general guideline but not an inviolate rule. I've often shown a couple of pictures to people before the challenge to get their opinions/suggestions.
Don't send it to another member without asking/making prior arrangements first. Don't post it all over the forums where lots of people could see it. Do use common sense -- we're not talking about co-editing the photos, just sharing and discussing them.
If you don't think this is a good practice, then don't show your pictures to anyone, but remember that the primary purpose of this site is for photographers to exchange information and ideas and help each other improve.

That's very helpful to me, because I don't really have any knowledgable feedback available here. I'd like to get beyond the "very good snapshot" sort of photo, which is what satisfies most of my friends and family. I did send the request to two individuals, along with the suggestion that if they would like to help, but are uncomfortable voting on my photo - they can always skip scoring mine. |

I've had a couple people ask for an opinion in chat. I haven't voted in a couple months so I feel there's nothing wrong with it. |

Don̢۪t get me wrong I would love to share my submission with fellow DCP users for advice prior to submission because I have no one here locally to critique my photo. But as I read the rules I could not help but think [IMO] they discourage it. "Anonymity" is very often discussed here. This is just my opinion and I have no problem with two or three users getting together and discussing or critiquing another photograph. What are 2 or 3 votes out of 200 to 300?
The reason for my post was so the user that asked the question would have two angles to look at and make a judgmental decision based upon two opinions.
