I know this story has been floating around for a number of years :)
But I just got it in an email and I couldn't help but laugh and grin.
Quote (source unknown):
REMEMBER THIS AT CHRISTMAS TIME
According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December. Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring. Therefore, according to EVERY historical rendition depicting Santa's reindeer, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl. We should've known... ONLY women would be able to drag a fat-_ _ _ man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost

Interesting. In Livingston's "A Visit from Saint Nicholas" there was never any mention of the reindeer having antlers or not. However, I can't recall seeing an image of Santa and the reindeer where the reindeer didn't have antlers. It's common for the males to keep them into January though. So it is possible that they are males or females.
I do however feel confident that Santa must be the one giving directions. Seems unlikely at best that, if indeed they are female reindeer and the projected human characteristics apply, they would be able to find the sleigh in Santa's car park let alone around the world. :) |
