I have the Canon D60 and I´m looking for a good wideangle lens. I mostly photograph action sports. I have been looking at a 15 mm lenses, that becomes 24mm on my camera. The 12-24 mm lens from Sigma becomes 19.2- 38.4. What I need is a lens that becomes somewhere around the 15mm on my camera. The only one I have found sofar is the 8mm lens from Sigma, it becomes 12.8. Has anyone here used the 8mm Sigma lens or knows about some photos on the internet taken buy a lens like that with a digital camera? Or do you know about some other lenses that are from the range 9mm-12mm? |

Tamron is supposed to come out with an 11-18mm wide angle for 1.5 and 1.6x crop DSLRs, so that should work for the D60, unlike Canon's own 11-22 EF-S. Also, check out the Canon DSLR-Lens forum over at dpreview.com.
Cheers,

One of the 15mm fisheyes would be a great choice. YOu can choose either to work with the fisheye effect (which is not very pronounced on the 1.6x cams) or to defish with something like PTLens.
the HFoV of the 15mm fish on a 1.6x crop cam is 89 degrees. You lose a little bit in the de-fishing process.
That compares to 78 degrees for a 14mm rectilinear lens.

the 8mm sigma lens is a 180 degree lens that makes a circle in the middle of the frame. this would not work with what you are looking for. i think the canon is the widest angle right now that isn't a fisheye. |

No it's not! It'll only work with the 300D or the 20D, not with the D60.

Thank you thank you thank you! PTLens is EXACTLY what I need for my Sigma 15mm lens. It works perfectly!
I often just leave the fisheye distortion (I like it...I'm wierd), but for those occasions I need to de-fish this is awesome.
Thanks! |

You're very welcome Rob! It does work very nicely, doesn't it?

Just curious, what tpye of sports are you shooting with such a wide angle lens? I shoot alot of ASA softball, High School football and basketball. I use my 70-200 2.8, with converter most of the time, wished I had a 400mm 2.8

if you go to //www.skateboardphotography.com and search through portfolios and photo critiques youll see some pics with the 8mm sigma fisheye. you dont get the complete circle vignetting due to the 1.6 crop factor. i myself have the 10.5 mm nikon fisheye and totally love it, but it distorts things a ton, if u dont like that it might be hard to find a wide enough angle for your camera, unless you use software.

Sorry to bring this back up, but the 1.6 crop factor gets rid of this?
sigma 8mm
I see the link doesn't work quite right. you have to go to the 8mm listing and it will show you a thumb of what the pics look like

Yep, you won't get the entire circle. What you get is almost all of the width, four black corners, and just over half of the height.
I miss being able to capture the full circle like I cold with the fisheye adapter on my little Nikon 995... but I don't miss the bad CA on that adapter, or the 3Mpx, or the shutter lag, or...

Interesting abou the "adapter" for the Sigma 15mm fish. I was not aware of that. I may need to try that one out and compare results to the Peleng.
I normally slightly defishthe Peleng to cover the frame, but here is an example that has been resized only. you can see the black corners, but notice that the image covers most of the frame on the 10D. It's really a nice thing, you take advantage of most all of the sensor, but get about 170° of coverage horizontally (without de-fishing).

The biggest problem with super-wide angle lenses is keeping your feet out of the frame
