This is a reworking of an old photograph. I wanted something in pretty harsh light. How do the skintones look? I ran it through NI after USM.
Thanks for helping. Hopefully I'll get a calibration tool over the holidays.

Thanks. We were planning on getting into a low end pro grade LCD in March or April so I'd done some homework but I got home yesterday and my 19" CRT had given up the ghost about 3 or 4 months too early. hehe
Oh well. Thanks for the feedback. I find my Hue/Saturation layer is somewhat different using this monitor than I used with the CRT. Anything look washed out or too bright?

Looks fine here. The underarm and the sand behind the right knee are brighter than I would want, but not washed out. I would attribute that to the harsh light, not to the monitor.
BTW: you do realize you are testing our monitors as much as yours. :D Could we get the original edit to compare?

Looks perfect to me, but I'm using an LCD too (Apple Cinema Display).
EDIT- I checked again to consider the comments of others. Arms, sand, face... all seem fine to me- I wouldn't change a thing.

If I were going to be very picky... on my LCD moniter... I pick up a couple spots on the face.. around the nose, just under the glasses and on the chin that are a tad bit bright... but again... that's really nit-picky. |

I'm running a spyder with the Photocal 2.7.7 on my LCD: Flesh tones on the upper body (arms and face) are pretty true, might be the models tan but legs are a deeper brown (towards the orange side). I realize we are looking at the underside (untanned) of the arms and that could be making the lower (starting just below the bra) portion pop out, seems just a tad bit out of whack.

Yep, I'm gonna have to just buy a calibration solution. Hmmm. Anyone have any suggestions?
David,
That was my insidious plan. I wanted to test your monitors. hehehe
Thanks again, folks.

Kevin
What LCD monitor did you end up purchasing?
Curious:
How do the two photos compare?
(The one you processed on your CRT versus the LCD)
Can you post them here side by side?
I'm still using the 19" CRT that I calibrate every 2 weeks or as needed using the Spyder unit. Planning on an LCD not sure when I can swing it though. Our oldest son in Austin has an LCD and whenever we go down to visit I'am amazed at how much better his LCD looks! But I'm perfectly happy with how my images come out using the CRT.

I use an LCD on one of the computers in my house and I hate it for photos. The brightness and contrast change from whatever angle you look at it, as do the colours. Its impossible to edit properly as you don't know what you're seeing the 'true' image. It's definately much sharper though, but the refresh rate sucks for games.

I was just thinking...I use my Toshiba laptop. Are laptop screens no good for editing? |

To answer this you just need to look at my entry for the 'Blue' challenge which was edited on a laptop.
edit: I just realised this will look right to you if you're using a laptop, lol. On a calibrated CRT monitor it's purple... oops!

So I shouldn't be using my laptop to edit? |

I wouldn't suggest it, no, but that's just me.

Most of 'em are pretty bad. I really hate editing on my IBM, partly because of hte low resolution, partly because of the rather low contrast, but mostly because the contrast & gamma shift dramatically with viewing angle.

@Kevin: The color looks good, but this may not be the best image to use for judging. The red channel is saturated over a very large portion of the skin tones.

I got the
Sony SDM-HS74P at BestBuy. I was planning on getting a LaCie or Eizo but I needed something and I just couldn't see throwing $150-200 away on a monitor that I was going to replace in a couple of months. This was easily the brightest and it looks to have the same color, saturation, hue and luminosity from just about any horizontal angle. Getting too far above the plane can yield different results.
Thanks for the comments everyone.

Not bad at all. I have a Spyder calibrated monitor and the only very slight things I see are the skin tone seems a bit red/orange (maybe a deep tan or bronzer on the model?). Also, her shadow on the sand seems a little bluer than I would expect.

Looks good on my calibrated-only-with-the-gray-strip-on-DPCs-voting-pages monitor.
A question though. According to your exif, you shot 1/4000 with 200 iso. Seems like enough light to drop down to 100, any reason you didn't? I'm just curious/trying to learn.

Looks good on my LCD but there appear to be black areas hiding the skin tones of the upper torso area. |

I guess I finally calibrated my LCD fairly close, cuz it's purple as purple can be...
