Hi Guys Gals and other creatures that go click in the night. I have been trying to respovle and issue with metting DPChallenges rules. Everytime I resize a picture. To meet pixels..the file size is to big..everytime I resize the file size down to a 150Kb..it is way to small an image. I have been reading threads and its not getting me anywhere for the last two days.

First, resize/resample the image to the proper dimensions (640 by whatever)...

When you save the image, go into the "Options" and use the slider to change the .jpg quality to a lower setting. That'll take care of it! Experiment until you get the right file size.

I use Infranview when resizing a whole batch of photos and it works well for that. For careful resizing I use PhotoShop Elements which gives me much better control. The save for web function is pretty good and easy to use. If you donĂ¢€™t have a copy of PhotoShop Elements I would highly recommend it as it can do all sorts of other useful photo editing.

With PhotoShop Elements you first resize and then save, it is during this saving process that you adjust the amount of compression to get the file size down below 150K. BTW you control the compression by adjusting the quality setting, the lower the quality the more the compression and the smaller the file.

Well I tried I really tried..but either the image quality goes totally Ka-put and becomes all grainy..or the file size is still to big..
Should I resize before I compress or after I compress.
I also have PhotoImpac8.o full version on this CPU..any help on that would be cool too..

Resize first... then compress as you save it...

What am I doing wrong? Here is a step by step analysis of my attempts at this.
Step 1) Pics from camera. (pics are already in jpeg mode when they come from camera)
Step 2) Launch Irfan View and open the file of the phot I want to edit.
Step 3) Go to option menu to resize/resample. I use the radial button for 640/480 to resize. (The following boxes have check marks or are the settings on that page.) DPI is set at 72 / Resample is checked off and set for Lanczos Filter.
Step 4). Click "OK" and picture shrinks. (Image info reads that the file is at 900KB in size..still to big)
Step 5).Click Save as so I can rename it not to loose or overwrite original shot. Now the menu with the slide bar is open.
Step 6). (The following boxes are checked in that menu: Save as Progressive JPG / Keep Orginal: EXIF & IPTC & JPG-Comment are all checked.)
Step 7). I slide bar to lower numbers..then click save.
When I re-open the image it looks like all the pixels in the shot went haywire. What am I doing wrong!!!HELP!!!!

Well I don't think my version of Irfanview is as up to date as the
one you are using, mine does not have a slide bar to set the quality.

How large is your final image? It may be that you are compressing way too much and this is way you files look funny.

It really is a lot easier to do this in a program like Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, this programs will show you the size that the file will be before you save it.

The first thing to try is at Step 5 to Save as in TIFF format, not JPEG. Then you can try re-saving it in JPEG with various settings without continually re-compressing the JPEG data (this leads to "artifacts"). The 900kb listed is the UNCOMPRESSED size (640x480x24bits/pixel) and will never change; the compressed size will vary with the quality setting and content of the photo.

If your image has a lot of lines and details, it will either need more compression or reduction to a smaller size -- I'll often size a photo to about 600 pixels instead of 640 so that I can save it at a higher quality level. For DPC I save with the "optimized" option (if available) but not the "progressive" setting.
