I am curious to find out how people made the jump from being an advanced hobbiest to being a paid photographer. I have a day job right now, but would love more than anything to just do photography. I am always keepin my eyes open for opportunities (private hirings, etc) and have had a few, but they were just rec's from friends. Any advice for someone wanting to make the leap?

I'm not a professional but I've been looking at ways to 'get out there' more recently. It really depends on what you are looking for. There are numerous types of professional photographers.

Do you want to shoot portrait and weddings? Do you want to cover events? Do you want to do journalism for newspapers and magazines? Do you want to exhibit your work in galleries and sell your prints? Do you want to shoot stock?

There are ways to get in the door for all those types and they're all different. You need to work out which style you want to do and learn all about that particular genre, look at what others are doing in that line of work, and market and sell yourself very well.
