Hey all,

Being that my 10D was a great pain in the arse to lug around Europe this summer, I nevertheless got some great photos out of the effort (with my 17-40). Now the issue is, I don't really want to sacrifice image quality, but do want a significantly smaller camera to carry with me from time to time.

My shooting style of late has tended towards fewer, more carefully planned pictures rather than volume. In fact, I usually don't shoot much these days unless I have a specific image in mind and go actively seek it out. I still wander, but not too often. What I do shoot I don't review or discard when I'm out. In short, I treat the 10D like a film camera.

This combination of shooting style, desire for quality and also portability has led me to consider several options for my compact camera, but I've basically narrowed it down to either a Canon S500 or a Leica Minilux. Film vs. digital. They're both roughly the same price. The Leica has a fixed 40mm f/2.4 lens, the Canon a small aperture zoom lens.

The desire for the Canon lies in me having CF cards which fit in them, and the small size. The Leica, image quality and portability. I desire a film camera (might well get an Elan next year) and since I'm likely travelling to Barcelona for school, and will likely be doing an exhibition with another classmate (who does have an Elan, btw) upon our return, the advantage of the quality from the Leica will be beneficial.

So...what to do? Make up my mind for me...

James.

go for a happy medium - the Leica Digilux 2 or even the new Epson R-D1 this is of course assuming that money is no object :)

Personally, I would opt for the Canon S70. It allows a lot more control that the S500, but not a lot more bulk. My dad has the S50 and that thing is great.

Canon Powershot S1 IS. Maximum versatility and minimum size without breaking the bank. 10x image-stabilized zoom, fast lens, full manual controls, compactflash media, a "small DSLR" feel, and even a full-size video feature. It's 'only' 3MP, but with that zoom, there's less need to crop.

Thanks for all the suggestions. That Digilux and stuff like the F828 are too big. I gave up my F717 for this purpose because it was still too big. I'm worried that the compact digitals won't satisfy my image quality needs, so am looking at a compact, fixed lens film camera as an alternativ. It needs to be small enough that it's significantly smaller than my 10D with no battery grip and 28 2.8 on it. The S500 appeals to me because it will just drop in a pocket. However, I know that it won't produce a decent 20x30 shot, whereas something like Velvia in a Leica or a Contax compact will rival my 10D in that respect.

There are obvious benefits to each. If Canon made a fixed-lens compact rangefinder with the 20D sensor in it they'd sell a ton of them. That's really what I want, but it doesn't exist (yet).

Decisions decisions...
