Better than I've done in awhile... But it doesn't get any less annoying when you see a 1 or 2 vote come in. Oh well, 'tis the nature of the beast, as they say... lol |

Well once again the votineg on this challenge left me with the understanding that I have much to learn. What I want to know..and I am sure there are lots of you with advice for me. The challenge rules state that the photo must be a certain size. What I want to know is how do I do about meeting the size requirements without my picture being to small for others to enjoy. I must be missing the boat entirely on that one because with both of my challenge entries. The # 1 comment was "to small"...any chat back help would be nice.

I know it's not, it's a decent score but it's hard to explain. I don't have the time I did when I first joined so when I do get to enter a challenge here and there I try to enter my best effort. Much more effort than I put in most of my previous shots. And I know I shouldn't have let my hopes get up but this shot, to me personally, is much better then my four current high shots.
I honestly thought I had a shot a ribbon this time but alas, it shall elude me and my subject will go without their reward (I promised them a big reward if it got me either a ribbon or my highest score yet) :)

Have a look at EddyG's tutorial if you have photoshop. The one challenge I have managed to enter I think my score was hurt by using garbage to compress the image. It left some wierd effects.

I didn't leave you that comment, but I did notice several in the past few challenges that are sized minimally. You should try to use as much of the 640x640 allowance as possible. At least one dimension of your photo should be close to 640.
I understand how you can end up with less, however. In several cases, I have resized to 640 too soon in the workflow and then later decided to do a crop--which leaves mine less than the optimal 640. However, if it were less than, say 500, in the biggest dimension, I would start back before the resize and just do the necessary work, because it will be too small for presentation (and your score will reflect that).

I don't know, so far so good I guess. Way to early to tell though.

What would an example of something electrical that involves no electonics be?

Ah but see it takes Electricity to RUN the lightbulb therefore making the lightbulb an electrical item.

That is how I see it |

I think the point being made is that there is a difference between electronic and electrical.
An incandescent light bulb is electrical. A flourescent replacement bulb would be electronic (as well as electrical). |

Maybe, but not exactly low tech. With so many mellenia of invention under our collective belts, you should be able to find something less sophisticated than an object requiring electricity to run. |

...and neither is low tech to me, whether "allowed" or not. This is a bit like arguing the difference between carbuerators and fuel injection in a horse-drawn carriage challenge. The oldest electrical fan you can find (while not electronic) is still high-tech compared to folded paper or an ostrich feather.

Well, I tend to agree, but there is still a difference between electronic and electrical. In the right context, I think that an electrical item could be well presented as "low" tech. |

I'm a new member and I've seen several references now in the forums to the spread of scores their photos are getting DURING a challenge. My photos only show the comments, I have no idea what the score spread is. Is there a link or setting I'm missing to see this information?

It's a 'catch as catch can' thing... When you hit the update button and see the vote count go up by one you do some before and after arithmetic to determine the value of the vote... That is, multiply the vote count before times the ave. vote before. Do the same for the after count. It doesn't work if you have an increment of more than one vote at a time.

You can look at this forum Want more than just an update button? and setup a excel sheet to get your vote scores.

I suppose it's possible, but I can't imagine how. You would certainly be handicapping youself in the voting. |
