I picked up a copy of Photoshop Elements 3 and have been playing around with its raw converter for the Sony F828. The raw converter that comes ships with the camera is pretty much useless. I was most interested to see how the converter that comes with PSE 3 would do. I am pretty happy with what I have seen to date and would recommend to anyone who has a F828 to get the new Photoshop Elements. Of course those of you who have the full Photoshop have been able to do this for some time now.

It is very easy to test how much improvement the raw image give on the Sony since it always stores a jpg image at the same time it stores the raw image. Below I have a cropped section of a file showing what the jpg version looked like and what the raw image gave. A surprising amount is lost in the jpg, this is not simple an issue with the jpg format but rather it is due to the processing that the camera does when forming the image from the raw data. The two big issues with the jpg are the detail in the ocean is lost and some of the highlights are blown out. When you are looking at these images keep in mind you are looking at a small cropped area out of a much larger photo.

That's interesting, Scott. I agree that the converter that ships with the 828 is garbage.
I had quit shooting in RAW, as the only thing it seemed to be able to do was convert to TIFF, and not very quickly.
Any other new features in Elements 3?

I upgraded from verion 1 to 3 so I don't know what all is new from verion 2. There is some pretty good dust removal stuff in it now. And of course you can now edit image in 16 bit/color which is very nice.

I must agree. I just picked it up last week and now I̢۪m only shooting in Raw. For quick family shots or candid I will use JPEG but I find I have more room for interpretation in Raw and so my photos for the Challenges will all be shot using it. I̢۪ve been playing around with it and now I can see why people are so enthused with their Dslr̢۪s. Here is a picture I took last night and played around with today.
