I'm thinking of buying this camera (together with the SB660 flash). I'm very much an amateur, but need something to take photos at the office - mostly quick indoor shots of "suits" and some of groups outside the office. As a mostly point and shoot person, is this camera likely to suit?

Unless they've changed it in the process of going from the 5Mp 5400 to the 8Mp 8400, I would suggest you'll be very disappointed with it. Low light focus is dreadful, and manual focus is near-unuseable, and shooting indoors those are things you'd need.

It's probably a great camera, as is the 5400, but it's a great camera for Macro and Landscape work. Shooting indoor portraits, why would you need the wide-angle? Wouldn't the extra telephoto of something like the 8800 be of more use?

You say low light focus is dreadful, but I would be using this in automatic mode with a separate flash - wouldn't that overcome the problem? For what I need, I would mostly use the camera as a point and shoot, until I got used to it. The wide angle is to photograph large groups of people. Any suggestions for alternatives?

Whatever you do, don't use the wide-angle to shoot large groups - you'll just find the ones at the edge look really strange and warped: no way to impress anyone.

The camera will focus before it fires the flash - exposure obviously won't be a problem, but focussing will.

I'd go for something much more point and shoot than the high-end near-slr types

Thanks Ed - the (slight) problem is that it has to look professional. I have a great Canon Powershot that I use personally, but there is no way something like that would look the part at work. Do you have any suggestions for a good point and shoot that would produce quality photos (that need to be printed on A5 size paper) and look like a more heavyweight machine?
