A free-study, 1-day speed challenge. Unannounced, where the image had to be made in the previous 24 hours. It would give an idea what we shoot when not shooting for a challenge.

I think that's a GREAT idea :D

It would need to be a little more than a 24 hour hour window. Not everyone shoots something everyday.
Interesting concept though.

It would need to be a (US) Sunday probably.

During the week there is too much chance people have not taken photos.

Make it a (US) Monday and for a lot of us that is our Tuesday, so again less chance of photos being taken on a Monday.

(US) Sunday means the US types will have had a chance on the Sat, and many others on their local Sunday.

With that proviso, I think that would be a fun speed challenge.

Making it a photo shot in the two days prior to the announcement would be better, I think.

i think that's the whole point. if you are always shooting something, you'll be ready. start allowing yourself an extra 15 minutes going and coming to work, take your camera out for a stroll during lunch, head out for 30 minutes in the evening after the kids are down...

i think this would be a great challenge, as well as a great motivator.

I'm sure it would be interesting.

A point this raises though: there seems to be a strong sense around here that one should be firing off as many frames as one possibly can, all the time. I'm sure many folks must be so busy shooting that they're missing some of the shots they could get if they spent a bit more time thinking and considering and planning before hitting the shutter release. Sure in sports and the like it works to be able to fire off lots, but in many areas a great deal more of the impact comes from thought and planning.

Agreed, since I started my daily pic project I've found it very beneficial for both my photography and my sanity :)

agreed. you have to apply discipline to yourself, but first, you have to really start looking at the world around you and trying to see it through the lens. some of my favorite images on this site are the ones where people, on their way to or from work, have stopped to capture an image.

i guess what i should have said was, always be looking, and when you see something, shoot it.

With this, I think that these "Yesterday" challenges could happen often and at any time just to keep people shooting and submitting. I really like this idea; It'd be very interesting. My suggestion is that let us say that the challenge is announced on Sunday, the 10th (hypothetical) and you have to submit a photo from Saturday, the 9th. We should be given three days to edit and submit a photograph from the same Saturday. This would bump up the amount of submission for people cannot and do not always edit their photos from the day prior so a little bit more time may be in need. However, they still may only submit from that same Satuday.

Very interesting idea ... cool!

I just had a thought about this ... there would be no way for the SC to know if the camera date wasn't backdated after the challenge is announced.
