Just curious...how do you all rate photos where the title places them in the challenge theme, but they don't really fit otherwise? There are a lot of photos where if you read the title, you might think oh that's kind of funny I guess it does fit or now I get it or something like that, but does it really fit the theme if the photo itself doesn't convey it? Personally, I don't really like giving my photos titles (I might not on a lot of them if I didn't have to), and I try not to look at the titles other people give their photos because I think it takes away from the photo itself a lot of time. But maybe I'm weird...I'm curious what others think.

I think about photos in galleries..or even work by many great (ie famous) photographers. Their work sometimes can be abstract and require thought or even discussion to understand them. Doesn't make them any less great. But being a great photographer means being able to make a connection, even if it's obscure.

People post all the time how their shot was misunderstood and therefore scored low..when really, people probably just didn't like it for technical reasons like generally bad focus or whatever.........

You still gotta have the skills baby!

IMHO

I am not very good at coming up with titles, but alot of times a title adds that extra touch to the photographers message. Where would a book be without a title? All that said, I generally try not to read the title until I have examined the photo. I dont score different for the title helping me to understand or not.

Depends on whether you are shooting to score, or shooting for you.

A macro photo of a flower in a landscape challenge with the title, "A Bug's Landscape" will garner a pretty low score from me. This is just an example.

More generally, a photo which isn't recognizable as meeting the challenge but has a title designed to stretch it into the challenge will lower the score I would otherwise give it. A fantastic, eye-popping, museum quality picture of a hub cap, for example, will not get better than a 5 from me if the challenge is "Flora Without Hub Caps." Same with a color photo in a "Black & White" challenge, even if the title successfully drags the picture kicking and screeming back into the challenge.

My counsel is (if you're shooting to score) don't fight the problem. Just shoot something that meets the challenge.

I know there are other points of view and I can respect a difference of opinion. This is just my opinion.

I think it is all part of the presentation. An abstract needing a title is understandable, or a shot whose connection is revealed through the title is ok (meaning I read the title and go, "Ok, now I get it"). A shot who's only connection is the title, I score as if it didn't meet the challenge.

I try to think of the image and the title together as an integrated entity. Sometimes a title helps explain why an entry fits the theme very well. Sometimes the title tells me that the photog know the fit was a very weak one and needed help. Sometimes the title is another way the photog can display a little additional creativity to an entry that is already a very obvious fit. For dpc challenges you are allowed an image and a title so that is what we should use in evaluating the entries. Sometimes photogs use "untitled", or just a few dots, and that is a statement in itself; a statement that becomes part of the entry.

Just my 2 cents.

A title (...a good title, that is) gives me insight into the photographer's intent. I agree with coolhar, in that the image and the title are an integrated whole. ...but I still need to understand the connection. If I don't get it, I score accordingly.
