My computer refuses to turn off. If I click shut down it will always restart.
History:
PC - Cyrix III 550 M, 196 RAM bought second hand 2 years ago.
Run with a 4G hard drive then upgraded to 80G this summer (lucky me it recognized it).
Operating system Win 98 Chinese Simplified.
After changing the hard drive I had hard time installing all the drives for sound, monitor etc. Finally I managed but no Antivirus. Got finally AVG and Bitdefender (free softwares)
bitdefender. Than HORROR came.
Got something like *.shs. I delete the file and check again. HORROR
Infected with 40 bodies Trojan.Dropper.VB.CD found in some files from silly downloads with emule.
Ok! Bitdefender found and delete them. I delete all the potential infected downloads. I check again and no virus just I/O error something.
Now the problem is this:
My PC refuses to shut down. Only restarts!
I appreciate any help though it will be tough. I do read chinese but I think I will burn my ears with technical details.
Thanks

I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless it still does it when you unplug it. :)
You might try checking the Power Options control panel.

seems pretty unlikely to me that a free virus scan would be very trustworthy in finding everything.
also i have come across issues where a virus wouldn't let the virus scan software properly install - even though it seemed as though it had...
i have also come across free scanners that like to install their own spyware.
sounds like the machine is still infected with something, and that something doesn't want you to shut down.
EDIT: if you can i would backup important data to CD, and format the drive. that would be the route i would take. odds are with 40 virii floating around they F'd up some system files...

I don't have a CD burner and I can not back up right now.
I have installed the Win 98 on my new hard drive 2 months ago and took me a while.
I have 4X20G partition and I don't keep important data on the C: drive (I don't realy have important data - mostly pics and music and few doc that can fit on a CF card).
I just hate the idea to do it again :(
Find all the drivers again, loose couple of nights... |

Mine does the same thing....so I just turn off the power bar :-)
Although now the whole system is crapped out so you may want to do something about it before it gets to that point. |

Does it run under Win 98? :-)
196 RAM should be enough though for the 8lb :-) |

virii in general are frustrating, i think that's the idea behind them - that and stealing data, and hiding points of origin for attacks.
rather than be lazy about fixing it - i would personally rather fix properly.

I think it will run over Win 98.
Actually, Win 98 is probably the source of your problems. I highly suggest you consider upgrading to Win2K or XP.
BTW, Win ME is worse.

Over quite a few years dealing with these types of things I have found that 90% of the time there are one of two things that cause this:
Win98's Fast Shutdown 'feature' and APM (power management).
//aumha.org/win4/a/shutdown.htm
The above page will give you instructions on fixing these two. Don't worry up front about the troubleshooting order they give, do Step #1 first and then try Step #10 second.
Personally I have seen the fix in step #10 fix this problem more often than not.
Good luck. |

Thanks a lot man!!!
It took me a little to translate the chinese menu on my Chinese Win98 SE... but
I did the steps and it proved that the #1 worked.
Thanks again!
So is not a virus, hopefully |
