I am very concerned about traveling with my CF card full of pictures, specifically going through airports. Has anyone had any experience with this and have you ever had trouble later with the pictures? I will have an external drive also but I don't feel safe with just one CF card and its potential destruction.
Thanks! - Kristina |

We took our four CF cards on our honeymoon to tuscany and never had a problem. We took them in our carry on but also had CD's burnt as backups.

No problems - I've been through 6 times this year with CF cards overflowing with pics. Never lost a one

Thanks for your replies guys! Have you ever had airport security hand-check the camera instead of x-ray? |

No - I tend to visit India, and they don't check cameras just laptops

I took the cf cards out of the camera and my bag in advance and threw them in the tray with the change, keys, eye-glasses, etc. No problem and they didn't go through either x-ray machine. My thinking was that, even if they did, they'd be going through with me and not sitting for a minute and a half while they looked at my bag.
I also requested a hand check for my camera as I had begun to believe that the cf cards are not a concern, but that maybe the sensor could be. I was bemused by the person (with rubber gloves and lab coat) who checked the camera, since it seemed apparent that she hadn't had a digital slr in her hands before. Don't know if it was so, but I did ask her if she'd like me to remove the lens for her. (Things like this seem to annoy the security guards, but if we didn't demand so much they'd have little reason to be employed.)
I also took an external hard drive (X Drive II) on the trip so I could download pics to it every night and delete them from my cards. It was a 10 day trip and I didn't want to have to think about ever not taking a photo. It seems that a hard drive isn't vulnerable either, but I have no proof of it other than all images made it back from the trip.
Hope this helps. The last thing I'd want to do is give you more to worry about. |

Thanks KaDi! (also thank you for adding me to your favorites list) I am travelling to Sri Lanka for my wedding in a month and I was just really concerned about getting the most important pictures of my life back safe. |

WOW! Sri Lanka! The closest I've come, geographically speaking, is Turkey....and the closest, psychologically speaking, is the paper I did for a college course. It seems you have (and will have) some wonderful stories to go with the visuals. Best of luck on the marriage! (The wedding is the easy part. ;-) )
What I wrote about with security were recent US experiences. International travel can be different. The only place outside the country where I've found a lower tolerance for hand-checks and the like, was Heathrow airport, London. (No sense of humor whatsoever, and that's before 9-11!)
There were good websites for international travellers when I last went overseas--I'm sure they still exist in some form--fed. gov't must have them. I'm over-committed for the week, but will try to remember to find one or two for you.
Best,
KaDi |
