I took my "new" 10D out yesterday for the first time and I have 2 problems. I thought I would save myself some time by seeing if those of you who had owned one for a while might have a quick fix.

1. When I downloaded the images I had to adjust the levels on every single one of them. They all looked like a white layer with reduced opacity had been put over them. I tried experimenting with the white balance but no change.

2. Although I had the camera set for RAW mode, and it acted like it was recording it in RAW mode, every single photo I took in the "creative zone" was missing. The numbers were all sequential on the jpg images like I'd never taken the photo, altho I had to wait for the camera to "process" it every time. I looked using all the software that came with the camera that was supposed to detect the RAW files, and I looked in every folder.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong before I go back out and try again today? I spent an hour photographing my entry for the Time Passing and they're not there -- only a few jpgs that I took in the macro mode.

Thanks in advance. You guys are always so helpful :)

your only gonna get raw in manual mode

Guess I didn't make that clear, sorry. The ones I took in the manual zone did not show up anywhere. I would switch back and forth so the numbers in the jpgs are sequential (those I took in creative zone) as if I had never switched to aperture or shutter mode and taken the RAW photos.

1.) Some ideas:
- First check the "Parameters" menu setting and reset it to "standard" if necessary.
- What lens were you using, and were you using a hood? Some lenses just don't have high contrast, it even varies by focal length on some.
- Were you shooting a ver low-contrast subject? Can you post an out-of-camera example?

2.) Hmmm, I'm stumped at the moment. I just did a short test, wth camera set to RAW, took one shot each in full manual, Tv, Av, Full Auto, Portrait, and Landscape modes. Camera recorded RAW for the M, Av, and Tv shots, but JPG for the others. Files are definitely all there and sequentially numbered.
Ineresting, I never knew that when set for RAW it would still shoot JPG only in the "basc zone". I'd never taken a single shot with those settings!

sounds like you were relying on the LCD preview when checking the exposure of the shots. the LCD even at it's dimmest setting is still much brighter than that actual image. turn on the INFO for the preview so you can take a quick look at the actual histogram for each image, and judge exposure by that - use the image preview merely for a composistional evaluation and to check focus and depth of field.

EDIT: i'd also check which metering mode you were using.

I am borrowing my friends Tamron 28-300mm 1:3.5-6.3 macro.

Soup, I didn't know I could get a preview on the LCD screen. The friend who sold me the 10D said the LCD would only show the shot after it was taken. I did press the DOF button when taking.

I'll upload samples in a second. Trying to get dressed for church and figure this out at the same time :)

Kirbic, when you shot in RAW mode did the LCD screen show a review? That was one thing I noticed yesterday when I was shooting that it never showed me a review of the ones shot in RAW while it did the JPG ones.

Yes, I do always get a review in RAW mode. If you are not getting a review, then it seems it really is not writing it. I'd give Canon a call and see if they can sort it out.

Ah, very helpful about the review. Camera is still under warranty, so I can do that. (call Canon)

Here's a typical shot altho I experimented with lots of settings and modes:

Stick the exif data in the description - or on here - lets have a look at the settings

Falc, I'll do that as soon as I get back from church -- I don't have PS open right now and would be late if I did :( Thanks, I'll be back.

I just tried to take some photos in the creative zone (aperture, shutter, etc.) and the camera won't even take jpgs in that area, so either I've done something wrong or the camera is having a problem. I'm going to call my friend who sold it to me to see if he has ever run into this.

I have the mirror lock on because I was taking photos from far away and sometimes hand-holding. I wonder if that could be it....

As for the exif data, how do I copy that so I won't have to type it all in?

I notice the color temp is set to 5200K -- could that have something to do with it?

Hey guys, the mirror lock was the reason it wouldn't let me use the creative zone and record in RAW -- I just turned it off and it's working fine.

Whew!! I wasn't too happy with having to send a camera in when I'd only had it a day!

I'm going back to this same place later this week and I'm going to try setting a custom white balance to see if that will help with the levels. I'll let you know in case it will help anyone else. I'm still willing to post the exif data when I find out how :D

What program are you using to browse the RAW files? Does it detect the RAW files?
11/21/2004 01:12:45 PM · #15
Gauti, they were never actually on the card because I was using the mirror lock. So, I was looking for files that were never recorded. It was my first time using the 10D so I didn't know it wasn't taking the photos. I just thought it didn't show the review in RAW mode.

If you use the new EOS View utility (downloadable from here - software section ) then you will see the exif data in one of the frames of the application. You can cut and paste the info from there.
