Sorry if this is the wrong area to post my question, it's half software/half hardware. Given that Adobe has come up with their DNG format, and is possibly the one company in a position to pull off producing a standardized raw format, I would expect that we will see DNG raw coming directly from new cameras in the not too far future. But for cameras that already support raw today, is it likely that they will be firmware upgradable to produce DNG format directly too?

I think it's doubtful. Manufacturers don't seem particularly eager to release improved firmware for existing cameras. Unless there is a serious problem or something.

Agreed with Colema19...and this would required a revision of the engine itself.

I'd be shocked if there were a technical reason why the firmware upgrade couldn't be done. However, I'd also be shocked if there weren't a political barrier. I seriously doubt that any camera vendor is ready to open the books on their format 100% as I think they're all too fixated in intellectual property.

Personally, I think it would HELP them sell cameras, but then I'm a Linux guy, so my opinion is pretty well known from the get-go :)

Supporting DNG out-of-camera should not require revealing any more than is already revealed. Many third-party software developers are already providing solutions for RAW conversion, so what more is there to know? Part of the beauty of RAW is that the camera can do a minimum of processing. Writing DNG would raise overhead slightly, but not significantly. The vast bulk of the data would still be written in the manufacturer's native RAW format.
It's possible that a firmware update might be capable of enabling DNG, and camera manuracturers are not that reluctant to relaease new firmware. There have been at least three updates for the 10D, for instance. Whether or not they would include DNG support, if it is possible, would of course depend on the political winds.

Probably not as much as you'd think unless the DNG format was something very unusual storage-wise. More likely just writing a different header into the file and possibly byte order changing and blocking, depending on the manufactuarer and DNG spec(which I haven't read yet). It ought to be possible to do in firmware for a lot of cameras.
