This is one of my first attempts at doing pinhole digital photography. the image does come out quite soft so i have sharpened quite a bit. I was going for the 'old time photo look'. I think the blacks need to be a litlle more faded to pull it off, but in any case i am open to feedback. I really just need to find a subject to experiment with. I will keep any interested posted.

What does "digital pinhole" mean? Is this a camera mod or a photoshop technique?

I'm curious why you are calling it pinhole photography?

Did you make a pinhole box to put over a CMOS?

Over the lens mount?

I don't get it.

it is a canon body camera cap that has a little laser cut hole in it. no glass or plastic to help. just the hole. i got it from calumet for $30. it has the equiv. of 50mm @ f180.

photoshop only to change the color, adjust levels and to sharpen, the rest is straight from camera, full frame.

what kind of exposure was that?
1-2 seconds? full sunlight?

With an f ratio of f180 and a focal length of 50mm, the pinhole cap offers very, very deep DOF. That is one of the characteristics of pinhole photography. With nearly everything equally sharp, there is really no need to focus.

we made pinhole cameras in school out of oatmeal boxes (round) and got neat effects from the curvature of the film. kinda reverse fisheye effect.

I made one out of a 30gal Garbage can and used 16x20 photo paper as film. I have also seen them made out of matchboxes using single frames of 35mm. Fun Stuff

I made my own Canon lens cap pinhole, but my hole was a little too big. Seems like you really need a 0.3mm hole, which is only 0.012" in diameter. Drill bits that small are hard to come by. Laser drilling sounds like a better solution, but I don't own a laser, LOL.

I made a quick'n dirty pinhole out of cereral box. I just held the carton over the lens mount, and used ISO 3200 because I was to lazy to set up a tripod, and then shot just some random stuff in my kitchen. The result, a Monet-like still-life, I kind of like it.

The exposure was 20 sec with overcast skies and the ISO was 50.

wow, jonr, i love the soft and fuzzy look. off to experiment with cereal boxes and a bunch of flowers.

I haven't tried it that way... I assumed the edge quality of the hole would be poor... then again, it's gotta be better than too big a hole.

Actually you can get a very nice sharp-edged round hole if you take some time and do it right.

Basically you take the shim stock and push on it with the needle point until the other side just starts to dimple out. Then you take the sandpaper and sand the bump off. Then do the same thing with the needle, pushing on the side you just sanded. Repeat until you have a hole.

You use a machine (I use a size 9) needle because it is stronger and thicker than a regular sewing needle. The hole size is not terribly predictable, but you can make a few (it's easy and cheap enough) and experiment. Based on the exposure required at a given ISO in full sun, you can then figure out what f-ratio the hole is and if you use a body cap, you can generally assume a roughly 50mm focal length and figure out what the hole diameter is from there.

Hope this helps.

It's actually MORE important that the hole have a sharp edge than a perfectly round shape or be of a precisely known size.

I have access to a laser cutter at work, I'll have to see how small a hole it can make.

You can buy a class IV 25W CO2 cutting laser kit for under $2000. Then you can cut a hole in your plastic cap and make a cheap lens! Or not so cheap. ;-) But cool...
