So, I was bored...
As the number of entries increases from say 200 to 500, the data on this site (taken from the Challenge History section) seems to show that:
High - reduced from 7.4 to 7.1
Average - reduced from 5.3 to 4.8
Average # of Comments - reduced from 14 to 10
But, on the plus side, as entries increase, so does the number of votes (although not at a 1:1 ratio), so that trolling voter who slams you with a 1 is less likely to make a big impact. Bad thing is, a challenge that receives 150,000 votes is likely to have an average of 4.7, where as a challenge that only receives 25,000 votes should have a 5.4 average.
Also, the number of entries has significantly increased since the site began, but as previously stated, as entries increase, scores decrease. That would seem to say that the quality of entries is going down, but that's not right...maybe it's just that people get bogged down during high-entry challenges, have less time to review and contemplate each image, and don't take the time necessary to give a valid score.
So, the moral of the story is use whatever means necessary to hold down the number of entries and votes if you want to increase your score overall. It may not be as fun, and it surely isn't fair, but hey, who cares?

This is part of the reason I regard the percentage of where a shot came in at, rather than the point value. If I end up with a 4.7 and it fell at 80% or higher, I am happy with that. If I have a 6.0 fall in at 50%, then I need to go back to the drawing board and learn from what went wrong.
Grading on a curve is final placement really.

Don't take it the wrong way but I'm glad you were bored. Those are interesting tid bits about how we operate as a community.
The higher number of entries, as least in part, reflects an influx of newcommers. Remember when you were new around here? Most of us were a little hesitant to comment much until we hung around for a while and got a feel for the place. Same goes for voting but to a lesser extent as most newcomers become comfortable with voting sooner than with commenting.
I think the flow new blood is a very healthy thing for dpc, warts and all.

You know, i'm not so sure now the number of entries in a challenge can be trivially correlated to the number of votes and comments.
I have about the same number of votes and comments for my entries in the b/w and heroes. The numbers differ by about 5%. Yet the number of enttries differs by 600%. The heroes entry has more comments, and the bw entry has more votes.
Granted, i don't know much about statistics and my two pics may very well be exceptions rather than fall under a rule. Just a peculiar observation. |

As Brad has stated above the only real figure you should look at is the percentage of where the shot came as each challenge is different you need to look at where you placed percentage wise and try and keep that as high as possible. |

Perhaps in the user stats, it should have an average percentage, instead of average score? Or in addition to average score? It'd be a nice way to "level the playing field" a little. Make people not feel badly who are coming in now, where it's nearly impossible to achieve an average score of 6+ with the voting down from where it was a couple years ago.
