I too have grown a little frustrated with the tone of DPC lately, but I'm not giving up. While I haven't entered a lot of challenges, this site has helped keep me connected with photography and motived me to make lifestyle adjustments that will allow more time for my hobby and possible second career. In the past I would browse the recent forum posts on the home page and find 3 or 4 interesting threads that were focused on a photographic topic. Today I mostly find people upset with low scores and trying to explain, debate, or justify their results. The frustating part of this is that I find fewer instances where the skilled photographers on the site are willing to share their experience and knowledge. DPC is a unique and wonderful community of photographers and I don't recommend that anybody simply walk away. If you don't like the current tone or direction, ignore the unwanted noise and lead by example. Post stong images that will have an impact on the viewer, post unique photographs that challenge everybody to see photography differently, and post meaningful critiques that will help the photographer grow. This is not to suggest that one individual is not leading or is a problem... this is my personal approach to the problem and a requested that others chose to do the same.

I have an IQ of 6000 and recently taught my dog to yoddle. I can lie about what ever I wan't online. You usualy don't need to prove you credintials and no one usualy cares. People join DPC to enjoy other people pictures and to share there own. I feel a little backgound is sometimes usefull in understanding an idividuals veiw point in a photo. I don't see how having a PHD will make you a good photographer. Photgraphy is a form of art. Art is always a matter of perception and personall taste. No piece of art will exsist without at least one negative critisism. DPC is a place designed for that pupose in my eyes. To learn obout your art through the eyes and opinions of others. (hmm im a pretty bad speller for having seven phd's) :)

My dad has his PHD. Taught photography at the junior high, high school and college level for many years. When I tried to get him to join this site (his retirement is driving my mom nuts!) he laughed at me. His comment was "I know everything there is about how to make a camera work. I know the logics of what makes a photography technically correct. But I don't know how to make it art. I will leave that up to you."

I gotta say, I've been there too. I've been pretty upset by stuff and people here in the past, and have wanted to leave because of it. As has been said in this thread, we all get upset, and look back on some of our comments with a little embarassment and a little regret. However, there are an amazing number of people here who are ready to jump on anybody showing any emotional weakness in an effort to show the world how brilliantly mature and above everything they are. I think people need to show a lot more tolerance, and it's easy to become emotional over something that means a lot to you, like this community and website. If you can't understand why someone is so heated about a subject, cut them some slack and don't inflame the situation by mocking them. Sheesh! As a result of my past experiences here, I REALLY still try not to care too much about what happens here, which as far as I'm concerned is this community's loss. I would imagine plenty of other people must be feeling the same way.

Good points. Hope people read this. Even in a "goodbye" thread, people are still on the attack. My advice: read it, breathe deep, and don't post. (And I do have a Ph.D.) ;)

LOL sooo true. The technical part is easy, the artistic part is something else...

I see a lot of this here:

*covers eyes with one hand and scrolls through forums blindly with the other*
*gets upset over someone's opinion*
*doesn't consider it's validity*
*posts own opinion*
*checks back to see if anyone agrees*
*posts angry post if people don't*
*goes crying to spouse*

this includes myself at one time or another :-)

I've been a part of this site for nearly 2 1/2 years, and have seen dozens of these "goodbye cruel dpc" threads. I always have to laugh that someone who "hates" the site and the people and the forums and the commenters and the voters, etc, etc, STARTS A THREAD to "leave the site"!

If I wanted to leave the site, I would just not come back.

If I wanted "validation", or a hug, or a pat on the back, or a "oh please don't go, we need you" kind of thing, then I would start a thread.

We are all big kids here, (OK, mostly) and we all know how things go in any big group, be it a family, a club, or a website group, and dpc is no different. Learn to deal with the dynamics of it, and try to get some enjoyment and education out of it.

This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for everyone at dpc who has helped me, taught me, and answered my many questions.

I must be missing the point, because I don't see the chaos some are talking about.. What have changed lately, except the fact that there is an increase in entries, and that people are getting less comments?

Who are trolling with comments, and why haven't I gotten any?
Are the challenge results different? I always find great photos at the top50 in every challenge...
Aren't people being friendly and helpfull in the forums? I always see threads with constructive critique and advice.
I do however see a increase in opinions, and fighting in the forums, as well as too many political rants. But no big deal.

For me this site is about only one thing, competition. I enter challenges to see how well I stack up agains others. I don't showcase my artwork, or my style. And I certainly expect EVERYONE to give me a comment.

Cheer up, and enjoy the challenges. Don't worry about the site changing due to increased entries. I believe the owners have done a excellent job so far in maintaining this site, and I have no doubt they'll come up with a great way to keep challenges interesting AND keep the growth.

Yes but you might find on closer inspection that`s she`s Queen of a United Kingdom..which is a little bit bigger than England :)

That is true, QE2 is Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, however if I remember my schooling, under the constitution where James 1 first became the first Scottish king to be king of England as well, the Monarch is still also defined as being Monarch of each of the home nations independently and collectively.

Yes..quite willing to go with that...just wondered why she`s never referred to as the Queen of Scotland..or Wales or NI but very frequently referred to as the Queen of England???

To keep this in line with the theme of the thread..can I say that I haven`t seen anything posted recently that would make me think the site is going downhill..it just seems to be the same old arguments..where I have noticed a difference is at the end of challenges when I find my highest scores tend to have gone to images that are well down the pecking order..but I can`t say whether that`s the site that has changed or me ?

***editor's note: this is a feeble attempt at sarcasm

We can correct *everyone's* English :) The correct word is "fortright". All I can say is I decided to be a part of this site because I was looking for beautiful pictures for my personal enjoyment and I found Cristi's (I even dropped him some lines). I don't even post pictures but I got to admire all the wonderful pictures you guys share, because of his.

(*** PS - WOW! Super in time! About Queen Elizabeth.... I must say I never thought of that myself... and believe me... you DON'T want W to be president of England...***)
