I was asked to take pictures at my sons HS function and agreed. The problem was the only place they would allow cameras was in the balcony in the back of the auditorium [a long ways back from the stage and very low light.]
I wanted to post a few pictures that show how far back I was and a couple of pictures I worked on last night [editing] and see what you think. Is there any thing I can do better in this situation? BTW to get decent lighting I had to have the camera set at f2.8 / SS ¼sec. and was not allowed to use a flash.
How far back I had to set up!
How High up I had to set up!
Just one of over 100 shots I have to edit. Does it look ok for a low light situation at 432mm Zoom? Is there something else I can do better in editing.
Free shot, they wanted some pictures to post in their annual.

Looks like you had quite a hard time there Scott.
The shot looks great to me, the guy's shirt is a nice white and natural looking faces etc.
I suppose if you wanted to lighten it up you could but that may spoil the balance a little, after all the lighting was out of your control.
Nicely done.
Paul.

This is what the FZ10/FZ20 excells at. The only thing I would suggest is making sure the stabilising mode you're using is mode 2, which is a little more effective than leaving it on all the time.
Oh yeah, I would definitely carry out some contrast masking with those shots, white shirts and dark skin is a nightmare scenario. Look up contrast masking in the forums or the internet if you're not familiar with it. Also, b&w can work much better in situations like this if you're choosy as to which colour channels you convert. |

So, they (meaning the school or the students?) asked you to come in and take a pile of pictures, and edit them, for free, and put you way up in the cheap seats? How magnanimous of them.
The shots came out pretty good for the challenges you were facing. |

Yea [cheep seats] they wanted some pictures taken but didn̢۪t want the cameras down on the floor level were the people were and could not use a flash of any kind. I told them it would difficult to the best of photographers with the best equipment to take pictures from that far away and lighting. And I warned them I was nothing but an amateur doing this as a hobby. I wanted up near the stage so the lens would gather more light but they didn̢۪t want anyone distracting the show I guess. It consisted of band pictures and a play. The play was very hard with them moving. I had to try to take the pictures at the exact point they were standing still.
They will not be upset if they don̢۪t come out good or great but I will be.

Done some contrast masking, how does this compare? I would love to make these look the best I can make them look. Thanks for the Contrast tip.

Likewise...I've got to learn a bit about that. Is one of those three yours? |

No my son had the lead roll in the play [‘B’ cast – he wants to be an actorâ€Â¦errr] that followed the band. I have pictures of the band, chorus, and the play. This was just one of the first I started working on and needed some advice. I know I’m not great at editing and needed some input, thanks to BobsterLobster for telling me about Contrast Mask. It helped a lot!
