Whilst the arguments continue to rage across the threads, I should like to propose something a little different in mood.
An Open challenge, but where you can only vote if you both leave a comment and have won at least one ribbon. Comments accepted from everyone, buut votes only counted from those with ribbons. All votes should count, there should be no 20% nonsense, as I think we can be certain that those who have achieved that are at least a little committed to the site.

It would be an interesting way of judging our abilities and a great learning experience. BUT I can foresee such a challenge receiving a huge amount of entries, each of which would probably get very few votes because past ribbon winners wouldn't have time to go through them all.

I would object to that format on at least two grounds-
1) It reinforces the idea that someone who has a ribbon is better than the rest of the community, and that is hardly a universally accepted presumption; and
2) It presumes that ribboners are committed to the site. I am pretty sure that if you added it all up you would find that the ribboners, as a group, and on a per person basis, vote less and comment less than the non-ribboners group.
What do you use to measure someone's commitment to the site? I offer that having a ribbon is a very poor measure.

I agree with you on this one. And you are right many ribbon winners do not deign to comment except on outstanding images. I also agree that one, two or three ribbons does not a better photographer make. I still drive myself insanely to better myself. Remember, althought I have been a photograpger, it has been mainly in the commercial catalogue side and not the creative realm required here. |
