Yes you can, if they are not executive to that site
Is it possible to post the same image on sites like dpcprints and stock providers?
Not sure about that question!
What are the preferred categories (as in what's required not what is over populated)?
The best selling images are people and business type shots.
Is there anything else that I should know about stock photography?
The more you upload and the more photos you have online the more money you make....I read on Istockphoto that every files you have online will make a avg of $1.00 a year....some photos make more and some don't even get downloaded...but on a avg. you will make $1.00 a image Minimum
So if you have 500 uploads that is $500.00 at least...
Hope this helps |
Thanks a plenty Mel and Paul :)

Hah, you know more and type faster!
But, 1600 x 1200 is 1.92MP (like my camera!) and is just a little too small for ShutterStock. However, a single 5% upsampling usually gets it over the limit; they've accepted about 5 of mine which have been upsampled a little to meet this requirement. |

The Problem with Istock is that
1. you can upload max of 10 images per day.
2. each image is uploaded as a seperate item needing about 5 screens with questions, fillins and buttons to press. (Takes ages)
3. They are very picky, particularly with brand names on your pictures. e.g., I tried to submit an overfilled ashtray, and it was rejected as you coule see what type of cigarette it was on several buts.
Basically said, you have ot invest a lot of time per image. |

I hope that shutterstock doesn't get saturated with new photographs that aren't great quality as this will turn off designers...that could be the fatal flaw of this friendly new website.

WOW! is right -- I don't think I've had more than four in one day. Congratulations ... how many photos have you uploaded so far? |

That will only happen if they lower their image review standards.

Isn't everybody saying that they're getting much more accepted than at other sites?
This is not saying that their standards are too low, but they are lower than other sites (or perhaps just more consistent?).
I love shutterstock...I just hope this hype continues!

All the images I've submitted anywhere, istock and shutterstock, were all accepted except for one of my jeep which was "copyrighted material" which I guess is because of the front grille. |

The reason why we're able to accept more right now is because our library is smaller (about 30,000 right now) than the others.. We're growing at 5k/week though.. So it may slow down once we get too many pictures of your pet fido.. We still like fido though - as long as its a creative picture (other places dont)
But we're helpful - we tell you what to do to your pic to resubmit it and get it to work for us..
All you would have to do with those cigs is a little photoshop blurring.. and you would be set!
Our upload and approval system is created for max. efficiency. We've spend lots of money on it (and the owner [me] is a programmer - so I can direct the programmers to work more efficiently toward possible goal). In other words - I'm 90% businessman, 10% photographer. Which is probably thet type of person you want selling your photos (and not 10/90 - like other places). Although - post your pix on all... I'm always up for a challenge ;)

You're doing a really good job, Jon!
Has the sight been growing rapidly in terms of subscribers as well? I know the amount of photographs and photographers has really jumped so I assume you're getting a bunch of new subscribers...

I just looked at the site this morning to check on my downloads (up to 4 total now!) and I saw the "Shutterstock branded Alexa tool bar" and I thought that the Alexa toolbar was spyware. Am I wrong on this? At least AdAware SE claims it is. I can't install it anyway but I wasnted to look out for others that use a PC. If I'm wrong, please correct me.
Ooops, obviously I can't add 1+3. :)

I use it - i guess it uploads data about where you surf - but its anonymous.
I like seeing where other people have been - who are using the site.
and being able to get contact information for any site i want.
and it has that oh-so-cool shutterstock logo button on it :)

I've just recently returned to the DPC forums and this is the first time I've seen this thread. I signed up for SS today and I'll be doing a whole heap o' uploading tomorrow!
Are photos of recognizable things, like say the Eiffel Tower or the Vatican permissible as stock shots?
Also, I have a photo that I took in Spain of four gentlemen that work in a glassblowing shop in the Poble Espanyol. I didn't get a model release (such a thing never occurred to me, I didn't think the photo would be very good!!). I recently emailed the Poble Espanyol and requested permission to display the photo online and to sell it. They spoke to the glassblowers in question and gave me permission via email to display and sell the image. Of course, I have the email. Will this fly?
I'm guessing no, but it's worth asking.

Non-legal opinion:
Those buildings are not protected under US copyright law, and should be usable (under the "Landmarks" category) if shot from a public location. I don't know if they are protected under international trademark law, but there are certainly a lot of photos of them in circulation.
For the glassblowers, maybe try a creative crop which excludes enough of their faces to make them personally unidentifiable.
Although, that email doesn't sound TOO bad to me : ) |

Thanks for that GeneralE. Unfortunately there's no way to do that with the photo in question.

One of the stock agencies has a large section on public buildings and what is and isnt allowed. I do remember that images of the Eiffel Tower at night cannot be used because of trademark or copyright or one of those things. |

You should ask that glassblower to sign a model release! email it to him.. and have him email/fax it back.
as for the eiffel tower - if the picture is at night, theres trouble.

Thanks Jon.

So I see : )
Offer to send them a free print in exchange for mailing back the release. |

The whole Pebble Beach development where that tree is located is private property. There's a fee to even drive through (17 Mile Drive) and look at all the rich people's houses/driveways -- if they even still let you. |

Free print in return for model release is a great incentive..
I've gotten a lot of model releases that way
