This discussion is verry long already I can't read it all, I vote "no" because I'd like to give the voters the decision weather a border is ok or not, and the artists the responsability on theyr borders. Aka do whatever border on your own risk if I think it sucks and distracts from the image or alters it or whatever I score you lower a bit. Simple as that.

How much longer is this poll going to stay open? Are we waiting for the no voters to create enough ghost accounts to tip the balance?

This isn't an election. The SC is just looking for opinions. Without an overwhelming majority one way or the other, no change is likely. |

I agree that it should not be an election. Is 241 to 203 overwhelming? That was the result of the poll on keeping comments anonymous. 241 wanted it to stay the same, 203 didn't. But the change was made anyway. I wish someone would explain that outcome, it's beyond me.
Has dpc ever decided a change, once made, turned out to be a mistake and reversed it?

Please leave terrible borders with all manner of editing effects, coarse edges, vignettes and angular slices legal - it might be my only chance of winning a blue ribbon. : )

the tryptich border was great, and should be allowed. however it won't have the effect that it did at first cuz "it's been done" that alone will probably deter people from doing it, and if they still do it and it makes the image more interesting, more power to em.

Perhaps it's just me, but the black and white II challenge seems to have a lot of really annoying and large borders. Do you suppose it was intentional because of the triptych controversy? |

The trytych did well because it was a not-seen-before gimmick applied to a superior photo. It was not a border.

Beyond any doubt the "tryptych controversary" is responsible for a lot of those borders.

I voted no because I believe a border [or what type] you use can be a double-edged sword. It should be your call if you want a border and if so what kind. Just remember it can up your score and at the same time it can down your score; it should be your call!

I'll comment on someone's border, but I DON'T base my vote on the border. After all it IS removable. People sometimes buy art that comes in a matte or frame, and later change it. It's not like voting for a pic with a border is costing the voter anything. I think it's silly to vote down a pic if you don't like the border. Oh well.

Gracious, perhaps you missed on of the B&W shots. It seems to have been DQed. Had a garish gold frame. Sure, it is removable with a few minuteds in photoshop. However, the artist chose to include the frame in his presentation, including it as a voting item. For the most part, a frame i can ignore, does not affect the score. Sometimes a good frame enhances the image and gets a boost in score. Some frames are just distracting or bad, and lose points for the image. Presentation IS part of this. |

Yes. As I recall it had to do with requiring a certain level of voting to participate in the next challenge or similar ...
We used to not only not allow any borders, but allowed submissions in only two standard sizes, 640x480 or 640x427. I had a submission DQ'd because when I dragged out the crop marquee, it went one or two pixels over the edge and added two pizels of blank canvase to one of the short sides. That violated the "no borders or padding" rule.
Some time not long afterwards, we decided to allow any aspect ratio with only minimum/maximum limits, and to allow borders, first with limitations and subject to DQ, and then (when that didn't work well either) with the current "anything goes except ... " version of the rule, with the judgement of the border's effectiveness (or lack thereof) left up to the VOTERS, not the SC.
That's why it seems silly to change it, to where just a few of us have to make the decision for everyone. As the DQ controversy in Macro attests, SC judgement is not always in accord with the general membership -- I hear plenty of complaints about how unresponsive we are ... so why give us more control over the results?
