Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro

we went to portsmouth on a whim - sort of - this weekend.
i recently picked up a canon 50mm f:1.8, and a sigma 105mm f:2.8 EX DG macro lense. i only used these two lenses while there to test them out.
i will say for certain now, that the glass makes a huge difference in image quality. the sharpness of these lenses is incredible, and the color rendition spot on.

the boat photo was handheld from 100yds away, and there is a small sign on it ( can't read it here ) but i did a 100% crop, and the text on it is perfectly clear.

anyway here is a couple shots, i will post some more tonight when i fully got through them. i will also straighten the crooked building tonight ;} these are uncropped - unedited photos - slight sharpening ( 50% - 0.6 - 0 ) for the web sized versions.

Thinking of buying both a 50mm (can't decide between the 1.4 and 1.8 - so glad to see some gorgeous shots) and the 100mm Canon vs. the 105mm Sigma. So thanks for posting your pics. It seems like you are happy with those two?

Pretty good detail in all those shots, maybe a little more in the one's from the 50, IMHO.

yeah quite happy with both.
the infinity setting on the sigma is awesome.
the 50mm f:1.8 feels a bit cheap, but it's what's inside that counts, and that seems to be high quality.
there are a few more from both in my profile. though i have only had them a few days - i am happy i spent the money.
by buying the sigma macro over the canon - i was able to buy the canon 50mm f:1.8

these web sized shots don't really do them justice. the detail from the sigma - even at a distant subject is really pretty good.

discernable feathers on a flying pigeon that's 100 or so feet above my head... i'll post more from the weekend tonight when i hopefully will get a chance to sit at MY computer...

i quickly looked through all the photos last night, and must have said WOW ( at the detail ) 50 times ;}

i had the urge to use the efs18-55mm a few times for some wider angles - but now i am glad i opted not to ( and had vowed not to ) - i think i would have been disappointed with the results.

Hey there,

I have been to Portsmouth a few times - one of my favorite places. I live on the other side of NH so I can't get there too often. Love your pics. I took the following shot in Portsmouth last summer - if you get a chance sometime, go in the summer and wonder through the gardens:)
