any chance you could make it available to us where the referers were linked from. I have links in a few places but would find it very valuable if i could find out which link they followed to get to your site to give me the credits...

When you refuse some photos for the reason there ar to many on the site like them, they should not count for your rejected photo. I might not know what kind of photos there are on the site and send alot of them (even high quality) and get rejected and thus low ratio acepted/rejected.

I think rejected must be - poor quality, wrong exposure, out of focus.. etc.. but not this one: too many on the site

Am I right?

I agree
also I uploaded a great "wildlife" photo. Wildlife must have been the reason it was rejected because it was a 12 point buck moving in on a doe. (December in Cades Cove)4mp high quality. I searched for deer and there was only 2 pages..most were zoo photos. Mine was real life in the wild. Is the catagory Wildlife the reason it could have been rejected ? It said to many the same.
Thanks

Is there a way to update keywords on Shutterstock?? I just can't seem to find the right place. :-P
11/15/2004 10:09:09 PM · #382
I am very disappointed with the keywords. They are obviously not checked at all, and it must be terribly frustrating for costumers to have to go through dozens of thumbnails that have NOTHING to do with the keyword they are searching for.
11/15/2004 10:13:32 PM · #383
I wonder if it would be beneficial to set up some sort of system where we could tag photos that came up under a certain keyword but have nothing to do with it. Like a tattletale system. :)

Beetle - what search are you dissapointed with?
please provide an example..
we're cleaning them up a lot.
thanks

No (hopefully to be "not yet" soon). It has been frequently requested.

I'm a little confused -- first, let me say I have like 8 images up on there and a couple downloads, but I was just curious -- what page would a consumer go to if they wanted to download some photos?

Would it be www.shuttershock.com ? It seems like that page is geared more towards getting photographers to submit their photos. Maybe I'm wrong, and I'm sure the site works well, but in my opinion, it would do better if that front page was geared more towards being user friendly to the customer that wants to download.

If people want to submit their photos, they'll find the little link on the sidebar that says "become a submitting photographer" or whatever -- then that link could take them to submit.shuttershock.com.

thanks -- Just my $.02.

I also wonder if the keyword problem is because words get separated individually, despite commas. For instance, if you search for cherry, presumably because you are looking for the fruit, you also get cherry blossom trees. Hot brings up hot air balloons, etc.

The front page of the shutterstock page is entirely geared towards buyers except for the one line directed towards photographers, is it not? It's all about how to subscribe and how to search.

Those are the 3 highlighted, bold things in the center column of the main page. And all the links there lead to how to become a submitting member.

I don't know if I was just searching for a webpage looking for some stock photos, i'd want like a browse here link or something really big to click on. I wouldn't search around the page.

Just my opinion, and like I said, it seems to be doing pretty well. I, personally, would make it so the photographers had to search instead of the folks who would be buying the images. I just figured it was going to be like that until there were a bit more photographers submitting???

??? Are you sure you visited www.shutterstock.com ?
Nothing of that sort is on the front page!

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle. I knew I was confused. I kept thinking NO WAY this site will pull people in. I've been going to...

//submit.shutterstock.com

and

www.shuttershock.com hahaha notice the h instead of the t -- i knew there was something wrong there -- boy i feel stupid.
11/16/2004 08:06:11 AM · #394
hehe...that's funny!

Well, after feeling left out for a few days at the beginning, I've now been getting 2 or 3 downloads/weekday (18 uploads) for the last week and a half...

I'm up to $4.00 now which is pretty cool for the last 10 days...

I never get downloads on weekends, though...is this due to the nature of the people downloading or do they just get tacked onto Monday's numbers?
11/16/2004 08:20:40 AM · #395
I had 5 downloads over the weekend, so they are not accumulated.
Yesterday was a good day. I had 9 downloads.
11/16/2004 08:22:41 AM · #396
Hey Mike

I have noticed that weekends are much slower as well. maybe 1 or 2 downloads other days for me go up to a high of 6 so far. Been there only 14 days with only 1 day without a download and $US7.00 in the Bank so far, seeing how I only started with 9 photos I'm real happy.

Also Dreamstime and Istock arn't moving at all for me and I'm getting pretty sick of their over neat imaged requirement there as well.

I just wish my refered photogs would upload some photo's, I have 3 through this link My Shutterstock link but none have uploaded a photo yet.

Edit
Opps just sold another 4 photos make that #US7.80 :)

Yeah...I've only got $1.40 at istockphoto and I finally got my first .50 download from dreamstime...

As for referred submitters, I've got two on my list but they haven't submitted any actual photos, either!

I'm just happy to know that even at this rate I'll make about $150USD over the next year...enough to cover a tripod or 50mm portrait lens! How can I complain about that?

I've had a bit of a look at stock stuff but not done anything about it as yet, as I'm too lazy to go through the various sites to find the information that I want, I thought that I'd impose on you nice people of this forum :)

Here's my questions:

What is the standard and minimum resoultions for stock photography?

Can the same image be uploaded to more than one stock image provider?

Is it possible to post the same image on sites like dpcprints and stock providers?

What are the preferred categories (as in what's required not what is over populated)?

Is there anything else that I should know about stock photography?

Thanks in advance :)

Here's my questions:

What is the standard and minimum resoultions for stock photography?

Most sites the minimum is 1600 x 1200 or 2 MP

Can the same image be uploaded to more than one stock image provider?

Yes you can, if they are not executive to that site

Is it possible to post the same image on sites like dpcprints and stock providers?

Not sure about that question!

What are the preferred categories (as in what's required not what is over populated)?

The best selling images are people and business type shots.

Is there anything else that I should know about stock photography?

The more you upload and the more photos you have online the more money you make....I read on Istockphoto that every files you have online will make a avg of $1.00 a year....some photos make more and some don't even get downloaded...but on a avg. you will make $1.00 a image Minimum

So if you have 500 uploads that is $500.00 at least...

Hope this helps

I can mostly answer the first three questions:

-For ShutterStock size requirement is for the number of pixels (W x H) to be over 2 million. For example, images which are 1500 x 1500 or 1100 x 2200 would each be OK. A file 1500 x 1200 is too small (only 1.8MP) For other agencies, size requirements vary.

-Stock contracts should be non-exclusive. If an agency wants an exclusive, they should have to pay a LOT more.

-You can use the same image for anything you want (see question 2), except to sell exclusive rights to someone else. But printing an image which is available for stock doesn't make too much sense and I think dilutes the value of each form; I try to use different pictures for stock and prints.

I suggest visiting each site and check out the FAQ and TOS pages -- you'll "have" to read them before signing up anyway.
