I have just returned from England and was very let down by the Canon 10D. I admit that at one instance there was some drizzle but I put the camera back in it's case. At certain moments the camera would just not capture an image. I formatted the CF Card, changed it, changed batteries but to no avail. All I was getting was a dark blank image on the CF card and I could also hear a different sound of shutter while shooting photos. What I realised was that when temperature were higher (either because I was inside near the central heating or because I was rubbing the camera body) it worked perfectly. Back to Malta all is working fine. Any possible reasons?

Thanks a lot.

i can't possibly imagine that it was designed with that flow.. try replacing it from the dealer, sounds to me like a flawed camera..

I was recently in Colorado and the morning temperature was 2 degrees Fahrenheit. I have the 10D and I had to keep one battery in my pocket to keep it warm and then change it periodically. I don't remember having the problem the same way when I shot in extreme temperatures with my D60.

The symptom was a sluggish shutter and then an error message.

It's only just started dropping below zero at night in England, so it won't have been particularly cold (above 7c/45f during the day).

I'm not sure your problem is related to the cold, I mean how cold did it get in England? I was shooting in -3 degrees weather yesterday and the main problem is battery life.

I had a very similar problem with my 300D last year. I was headed up for a ski weeekend in Maine, it was probably 0-degrees fahrenheit, and my camera was in the trunk for the drive up. When I got it there, I took a couple shots that were totally dark. After the camera warmed up, thing seemed normal, and have been since. I figured that something about the CCD (same one as in the 10D) would not register the light properly in very cold temperatures. But I only have own anecdotal evidence (and now your story) to corroborate that theory.

Someone was with me and he had the 10D and he did not find any problems. So you still think it was the temperature?

Thanks Estelle

Probably the battery was way to cold!I took lots of pictures last year at -20F and worked great but battery life is not long at that temperature.I am only out in the cold for an hour or so and the camera spends most of the time in a case under my jacket.Try keeping a battery warm close to your body so it only gets cold when you put it in the camera?

If it was drizzling,I would say cold wouldn't be to much of a problem!

If it was drizzleing that means that it was above 32 degrees F. Check your owner's manual to be sure but I think your camera's normal operating range for temps would go down to at least 32F.
