I guess I'm confused then about what a "macro" is because I've gotten 3 comments and all talk about how more of my shot should be in focus. I was under the impression that shallow DOF and clear definition of one part of the image equaled a macro. (Like my October Free Study entry)

Am I confused?

I'd like to blame my bad score on this, but I think it also has to do with my title...

Can be either. YOu can have a macro shot with shallow DOF or the whole thing can be in focus. I haven't been here long but my observation so faris that a lot of voters here don't understand the fact that not all of a photo needs to be in focus and that a shallow DOF could actually be (gasp in horror) intentional!

I believe the term macro merely refers to the 1:1 ratio of the image (same size on the sensor/negative as in real life). Granted, macro has come to mean a nearly life size representation (maybe 1:3), and in this challenge we also have extreme close-ups (and some that aren't close at all).

It's an issue of detail I think (I just voted on some images and left the same comments). DOF is cool but you've still gotta have the subject of the shot in focus (you can't just have a blurry shot that's not even an artistic statement lol). A good photo has a clear subject, like if you're doing a shot of an eye and the focal point is the pupil. Well if you're DOF takes over and only the eye lashes or some strange part is in focus, then your DOF is all wrong and the shot might be crappy.

Just a thought. It's not that DOF is bad, it's how you use it!

That's what's happening to my entry. What I WANT to be in focus is, but I accidentally typed the title wrong so that people are scoring it down because I didn't match the title to theimage enough. Stupid stpuid. Oh well, there's a first time for everything.
