Hey,
I was wondering if anyone is having problems with the D20 just locking up in the middle of shooting? I have seen quite a few people complaining about that on the different forums across the web.
I am planning on updating my C-5050 to a digital SLR pretty soon and even though I want the 20D I may end up with the D70 because of the price difference.
IT SURE WOULD be nice for some Canon fans to talk me out of that since I do have several Canon lenses like their 75-300 IS lense and if I really wanted to make ABSOLUTELY sure to get the camera that best meets my needs then of course I'll have to have one of each plus lenses. Sigh!
Now all I have to do is work out the funds.
Also, if there are any 35 mm camera buffs out there I have a question about the EOS 3 camera. I purchased mine as soon as they hit the market back in early 1999 I believe and it broke the first time I used it (the shutter.)
Canon repaired it and it broke the first time I used it after getting it back. I was traveling 3 weeks out of the month back then (not to mention having a car wreck) and never did get it sent back to them before the warranty expired.
A Canon camera repairman that does not work on this model told me that the early models had a bug and COULD NOT be fixed. Of course, Canon says thay can fix it for $260.00 and will not tell me if there ever was such a bug or not.
Does anyone know about a bug like this in the early models of this camera? It's an awesome camera but not if I can't get it fixed.
Thanks a lot.

The lockup problem you mention was fixed with a firmware upgrade. Fantastic choice for a DSLR, get it! You will not regret it.

The firmware fixed it. I think the new 20Ds are being shipped with the 1.05 firmware. It's no longer an issue. Great camera.

I was very frustrated with my 20D too, having to take the vertical grip on and off to reset it, until I upgraded the firmware. Now, however, I do still notice sometimes that it locks up when reviewing pictures, but it's no problem to turn it off and back on. I still love the camera. :) |

The only gripe I have about my 20D is that it has 10D label on it.

I have had one lock up, Err 99 I think it was, with the 1.0.5 firmware.
Worried me as I was out and about and it refused to clear, even if I took out the batteries.
Eventually did manage to clear it by taking out the batteries and leaving them out for a minute or so. I assume that allowed some capacitor or similar to discharge.
All has been fine since.

Laugh! Wait til you get a correctly-labelled camera, you'll love it too :) I don't know which I was more excited about when I first took it out of the box: that it came on in .2 seconds, or the sound of the shutter going ON and ON and ON as I held the shutter release button down :)

I had an Err99 once from my 10D, but I believe that was a problem with the memory card. Heck, I don't know, might have been the battery. But yes, it is scary when you're shooting at... say... a wedding(!)... and your camera squeals out on you.

I've had one lock-up only, and using 1.0.5. I came as I was fidling with a CF and trying to get the AI Servo to turn off temporarily using the * button. Never did manage to get it to work. I just popped out the battery, and haven't had the problem since.
No worries. Get the camera. You'll love it!
