Carpenter Chrisby naomikComment: So is he a carpenter or a model? I just ask because part of this challenge was to capture the person in their environment. Imo, he is not "in his environment." He is inside a construction zone, but he is not immersed in it. No hard hat, short pants are questionable attire for construction zones, he is way to clean...just little details, but they add up. |

The Tree Doctorby dainmcgowanComment: This is just a question...does this person always wear that much eye make-up when they are tree doctoring? I come from a family of orchard owners and I've never seen a tree doctor wear any make-up or even have their clothes that clean. I think your downfall with me, is that I have experience and first-hand knowledge and memories to pull from so this shot does not communicate to me what my memories flash before my eyes. That being said, the profile is nice. The focus is inspired. I have a little problem with all of the pink, but that is where art comes in. |

Fishermanby russiComment: Unfortuantely, your subject is fighting the sun. His eyes are squinted and he is looking slightly down in an attempt to keep them open. You can also see the brow-line is squinshed and not in a thoughtful way. |

Sleeping Beautyby pearlseyesComment: I think the coloring hurt you a bit. This looks "dirty" to me. How was b&w? Did you try color? I'd be interested is seeing the shots you didn't use. |

Studing Disciplineby fededecbaComment: Slight nit-picky thing here...the reason I can tell this posed. She is holding a pencil and her paper is buried under books. I would like to see her really studing, not showing us how she studys. Also, along the posed line...I have never seen anyone smile while they are studying late at night. Just an observation. |

Brokenby DogAngelComment: This doesn't pop for me. Colors are blown and I had to rely on the title to figure out your intent. Environmental Portraits shouldn't be so abstract in presentation (not abstract in the art sense...I guess a better word would be obtuse) that you need a title to tell everyone what is going on, imo. My biggest problem is why would a relatively well-dressed young women be in scrap lumber yard? She doesn't work there, she isn't a run-a-way. If you're trying to juxtapose teen angst against an editorial comment on the "scrap" there are much better ways of doing that. |
